If you have not read the Pulitzer Prize-winning work of Harper Lee - To Kill A Mockingbird, I urge you to do so. I recently re-read this masterpiece after remembering that it spoke to me as a child, but not truly understanding or digesting just how profound this piece of literature was until I re-read it.

With heartbreaking events being plentiful worldwide due to the current pandemic. The profiling and shooting of another black person in the US, once again, went unreported in the news. The death of this young black man, Ahmaud Arbery, 25 years of age, who was simply out for a run, is shocking and appalling.

Ahmaud Arbery was ambushed and murdered: that's it, there is no way to grammatically polish this straight up, hate crime. Committed by a father and son who had "suspicion" that perhaps Ahmaud may "fit the profile" for recent housing burglaries in the area. Without any evidence, the gun yielding father and son took it upon themselves to follow this young man on his daily run, which tragically ended in the murder of Ahmaud.

This shooting yet again shines a theatrical spotlight on the very apparent systematic racism that is still screamingly obvious in the US. We know the profiling and shootings of black people in the US are overwhelmingly disproportionate. This "debate" is over: it ends here, these are facts. Understand that we as white people are contributing to this ongoing, unfair, unjust treatment of our fellow human beings. By saying nothing, and doing nothing, we are leaving our brothers and sisters, whose skin just happens to be darker, to fend for themselves when we should have their backs. I cannot vote in the US, I am an Irish transplant here, but many of you reading this can, and have the power to demand change and shift what is socially tolerated by using your voices. Please, do not underestimate your voice and your position of privilege. There is no universe where a young white male would get ambushed and shot dead while out for a run and for it to go unreported in the news. That, says it all.

Atticus Finch, a white Alabama lawyer in the 1930s, and major character in - To Kill a Mockingbird. A single father who's penetratingly intelligent character is viewed as brave, honorable, respectful, and compassionate to others. He represented a black defendant, in The South, in a time where his defendant - Tom Robinson, essentially stood no chance in front of an all-white jury. Even though the evidence obviously points to Tom's innocence, and Atticus presents the most excellent defense, he cannot win, because Tom is black. There are many quotes in this book that stick with me but one stands out the most: "the secret courts of men's hearts" referring to how a white person (in this case the all-white jury) felt about a black person in their hearts. Even though they would never admit they were being prejudiced, they all carried their prejudices and resentments into the jury box. Atticus took this case knowing he would lose - but with the hope of creating greater fairness in the long run. That is how we should all live our lives.

We live in a time where we have incredible power in our hands, literally. The devices we communicate with every day, our phones, and laptops can serve as a powerful tool towards social justice - one small step at a time. You can, and should, take a few moments of your time to post, share, and call out the guilty perpetrators of this crime, and others like it. And, more importantly, the illegitimacy of the courts and politics and deeply rooted systematic racism at play here. The people who committed this crime are a product of what is being tolerated and we are witnessing an abdication of responsibility on the part of state governments. If this behavior was unanimously unacceptable across states, these types of people and their prejudiced belief systems would fade out fast. Cowards know the right thing to do, but are too weak and afraid to do it. In this case, and many others like it, to add insult to injury, the criminals and judicial system are clouded by nepotism and delusions of grandeur.

What's bad for the hive is bad for the bee: People are much better off when their whole city is flourishing than when certain citizens are, the same applies to countries and the whole world. We are all bonded together in this thing called life, like it or not. If we forget the fundamentals of decency, we are not as evolved, or advanced as we think when we turn a blind eye on an ugly archaic system like racism. Equality of rights under the law, to ALL persons, is so basic a principle to democracy, and commitment to the ultimate value of the individual - it must be reflected in the fundamental law of the land. It is our responsibility as citizens of this planet.

While writing this article, I heard the men who killed Ahmaud have finally been charged. Although it's hard to comprehend why this took two months to happen, it's screamingly obvious that justice is ONLY being served now - because a video came out of the incident which ignited the world into demanding justice. This was not a citizen arrest "gone wrong", this was a modern-day lynching. Ahmaud was not putting anyone's life in danger, so why did they bring guns? The arrests were finally made, not because they (the authorities) saw the video, but because WE saw the video. It should not take a video going viral to get the authorities to bow down to justice, they should be seeking justice all along.

Racism is bad for everyone. It sets the tone for bad policymaking and bad decision making. I can't even imagine how exhausting it must be to carry around all that fear and anxiety towards another person. Isolating oneself and manifesting hate, forgetting our common humanity. We can have differences in our core beliefs, politics, religion, sexuality, guns, etc.. while respecting each other's characters and abilities. We've lost the ability to converse with our opposites, but that is the space where growth happens. If racial equality is to be achieved, it requires white recognition that racism continues. We have to recognize the social stratifications that privilege whites and disadvantage people of color.

"It's a sin to kill a mockingbird": Innocence destroyed by evil, the mockingbird represents the idea of innocence. Thus, to kill a mockingbird is to destroy innocence. As Atticus Finch says "Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy" and that is why it is a sin to kill a mockingbird. Ahmaud was simply going about his day, causing no harm or threat, his innocence was destroyed by cowardice evil.

See what happens when we use our voices collectively? Get loud, stay loud, and get used to using your voice. We have many things to solve in this world, but this giant task can be made lighter with united individual efforts. We are different; we are one.

"To Kill a Mockingbird" means innocence. However, specifically, Mockingbirds imitate the songs of other birds, so it would be a sin to kill a mockingbird based on the sound they produce. It is just imitating what they hear. Sometimes children imitate the ideas and behavior of others without fully understanding them, so child is innocence.

Mocking bird is a classic of American literature, it tells us about justice, integrity and doing the right thing, even one person against the angry and emotional mob. It tells us about racial prejudice and the impact of race and class in the American Deep South. Ultimately it is a story of humanity and the need for justice in society.
