Maya was originally an animation product based on code from The Advanced Visualizer by Wavefront Technologies, Thomson Digital Image (TDI) Explore, PowerAnimator by Alias, and Alias Sketch!. The IRIX-based projects were combined and animation features were added; the project codename was Maya.[7] Walt Disney Feature Animation collaborated closely with Maya's development during its production of Dinosaur.[8] Disney requested that the user interface of the application be customizable to allow for a personalized workflow. This was a particular influence in the open architecture of Maya, and partly responsible for its popularity in the animation industry.
In the early days of development Maya started with Tcl as the scripting language, in order to leverage its similarity to a Unix shell language, but after the merger with Wavefront it was replaced with Maya Embedded Language (MEL). Now one quick addendum I will add...make sure you pay attention to "version" or, at the very least, check for an option called "ignore version". If you're NOT running the same version at home as you are at school (say, Maya 2013 vs 2015), you MAY have some issues opening a project in an older version of Maya that was saved in a newer version (just as with A LOT of software). I do seem to remember having this problem myself after the college I attend had upgraded their version, but I was still running an older version...I don't remember the specifics, but I do remember having to check that "ignore version" in order to get the files I created/worked on at school to open on my system here at home.
Thanks for the reply both of you, I was able to call a representative at autodesk to confirm it's okay and they said it was okay. It wouldn't make sense if I could take my class work home but not use it. Unless it was the commercial version which I know its not, student, education, or anything that falls into learning seems connected anyways. I also asked my professor and he also said it was fine and the only thing is the student dialog warning will only appear when the file is opened. Anyways thanks all for the help.
Downloads can be run as a trial for 30 days then will need to be activated. It is likely that only the more recent versions of Maya will activate with an Indie license (the license I think is more tied to you rather than it being a serial number like thing). You are buying a subscription to run Maya latest version or some past versions. You are not buying say Maya 2020, that is the old perpetual model to my thinking.
Is there any possible way I can get the full version of Maya without having to get the student Maya or pay for it because I want to start using Maya, I know it's a powerful tool. And I don't really like blender so I want to use Maya so anyone got any advice?
