Hi, I am looking at buying a 3D printer but really want to use it to replicate things I already have around the house (I.e. a broken knob). My question is if there are any affordable 3D cameras/scanners to take an accurate 3D scan?

If there aren't any affordable ones, then how much are the expensive ones? And, how do people acquire 3D information without a way to just scan the items? Do we have to design it from scratch using software?

Thanks.

I believe there are some hacks to use the Microsoft kinetic to accomplish this.

Not Terribly expensive.

There is an Indiegogo campaign that launched recently -- the Photon 3D Scanner -- which looks promising.  I pledged on that.  For $350, it should at least be fun, and I'm hoping that it'll be better than that. http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/photon-3d-scanner/x/2842120

There's also this one. http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/rubicon-3d-scanner I just threw down for it. Will be great to replace a lot of small plastic crap around the house that ends up breaking. Much better than my current process which is either using a Kinect with Skanect (http://skanect.manctl.com/) for larger things (still not very accurate) and modeling on top of that or just taking orthographic photos and measurements and modeling to those. For small things, like doorknobs and such the Rubicon would be ideal. You can't beat the price, $200 is a steal. Especially considering Makerbot's complete joke of a price of $1400 for their scanner which nets the same results. Even if they were better, they're darn well not 7x better. They really need to get with the program on pricing imo. That being said, I love my Replicator 2x and use it all the time. So not disparaging them as a whole, just their scanner price is ridiculous.

You can just use your regular camera of phone and then use 123catch to create the 3d image.   http://www.123dapp.com/catch
