We will be having our usual meetings this month at Armand Bayou Nature Center and the Magnolia Forge. Both venues are an excellent opportunity to try your hand at blacksmithing.
Last month we had to cancel due to the grounds being too wet at ABNC. So this month we will be making a coal rake from 3/8" round that we were going to make last month. Keep in mind that we won't be having the ABNC meeting in November since they will be having their Martyn Farm Festival (we will be demonstrating there so come on by).
Les and I will be demonstrating at Austin Town November 2 and 3. See below for links. We will also be doing Dickens on the Strand November 30 - December 2. I am looking for volunteers to help us out. I have one person and would like to get at least one more.
We now have Bill Epps supplying formal training at out Magnolia location. Go to the Magnolia Smithy Facebook page for more details. Go to Facebook and search for "Magnolia Smithy - Houston Area Blacksmiths Association" or click here.
I often receive requests for demonstrators and for blacksmiths who will do work on commission. To help me out in responding to these requests please send me your name, email and phone number stating if you would be interested in receiving information about these requests. I will put together a mailing list specifically for notifying you about these requests. Please note that any interaction with the requesters will be a non-HABA sponsored relationship.
Be sure to check out the HABA page. The calendar has been updated with upcoming events.
Most of the events are open to the public and we often team with other organizations such as Armand Bayou, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, Barrington Farms (Washington on the Brazos), Lake Jackson Historical Museum, Brazoria County Historical Museum, Magnolia Train Depot (where we have built our own forge shop) and others around the Houston area.
We hold monthly meetings to which the public is invited to observe. If you want to swing a hammer on hot iron bring safety glasses and gloves and $20 to become a member (membership can be renewed at the end of the year) and covers all family members. All of our members are glad to show a new person the basics and answer questions (there are no dumb questions). Feel free to send me any questions about HABA or Blacksmithing and I will endeavor to find an answer for you. Comments and suggestions are also welcome.
