I hope you'll join us this year for another exciting day! In addition
to the weaving and spinning demonstrations, we will have live music,
including a typicla trova from Pinotepa de Don Luis, absolutely delicious
and unique Mixtec Chile Rellenos (vegetarian (nuts) and
chicken) for sale, prepared by the women of Pinotepa de Don Luis (yes, if
you enjoyed them on our Carnival trip last year, these are the
ones!), and Habacuc Avendano will be back this
year. He is the head of the Tintoreros de Pinotepa de Don Luis,
the cooperative that harvests the sacred purple dye from the snails that
live along our rocky coast. He'll be sharing his DVD and giving us an
update on the status of this endangered species.
As a very special guest, Master Ceramist and
Artesan Irene Aguilar from Ocotlan, will be selling
her signed, original figurines of typical Oaxacan scenes, from funeral
processions, to Virgins to ladies of the night! This is a great
honor as Irene has been designated one of the Grand Masters of Mexican and
Oaxacan Folk Art by the Banamex foundation.
Also, Abigail Mendoza, a master Zapotec weaver from
Santo Tomas Jaliezo, will be with us again with her fabulous belts and
bags! She will be taking your special orders for some of her finest
pieces!
I try to bring you something new each year so this year we will be
featuring the hand-made products by "Ojo de Dios" which has rescued an
extinct cotton weaving technique using feathers!? With the
passion of many weavers and collaborators, they have handmade organic
coyuche cotton clothes transforming the original designs into something
more connected to the actual artisans from the Sierra Sur that had learned
to weave the yarn by hand in Ghandi´s kind of lathes. They also bring
baskets made of pine needles, and other things from the cold Sierra Sur of
Oaxaca. Finally, we will have our Mexizen line of furniture on
display, featuring the woven textiles of the Costa Chica, and last, but
certainly not least, author Bill Missett, a 20
year Puerto resident, will be on hand selling and signing a limited
number of his "Soul Surfer Johnny" series, the almost true, semi
autobiographical stories of Puerto Escondido in the "good old
days"! He will also be selling the Puerto 2012 Commemorative
T-shirts from the Mayan New Years Celebration. All proceeds from T-shirt
and book sales will go to Pina Palmera-the camp for disabled in
Zipolite.
So it's going to be a big event! I hope you'll tell all
your friends about it and forward this e-mail to them! See you next
Sunday! RSVP by e-mail if you would!
Thank
you for your support!
