A flash-animated original video animation (OVA) by DLE titled Haiyore! Nyaruko was published in between October 2009 and March 2010, followed by a television series, Haiyore! Nyaruko: Remember My Mr. Lovecraft, which aired in Japan between December 2010 and February 2011. An anime television series by Xebec aired in Japan between April and June 2012 and a second season aired between April and June 2013. An OVA was released in 2015. Two manga adaptations have been produced. A video game adaptation, developed by 5pb. for PlayStation Vita was released in Japan in May 2013.

The story of Haiyore! Nyaruko-san centers around Nyaruko, a formless Lovecraftian deity of chaos (Nyarlathotep) who can take on the shape of a seemingly cute silver-haired girl. Mahiro Yasaka is a normal high school boy who is being chased by a fearsome black alien one night, until Nyaruko saves him. She explains that the creatures from H. P. Lovecraft's works are actually races of aliens, and that she has been sent to Earth by the Space Defense Agency to protect him from being kidnapped by an alien trafficker. Aliens find Mahiro and the Earth strangely attractive, for entertainment, auction, or resources. One by one, the Great Old Ones land on Earth illegally. Eventually, Nyaruko and two other Lovecraftian creatures, Cthugha and Hastur, end up being freeloaders at Mahiro's place.[2] Mahiro has become accustomed to his protection detail of Nyarlathotep (Nyaruko), Cthugha, and Hastur making his life fascinating.

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san began as a light novel series written by Manta Aisora with illustrations by Koin. The series, spanning twelve volumes, was published by Soft Bank Creative under their GA Bunko imprint between April 15, 2009, and March 17, 2014.[3][4][5] Short stories have been published in Soft Bank Creative's GA Magazine.

An anime television series produced by Xebec aired in Japan between April 10 and June 26, 2012.[note 2][7] Crunchyroll streamed the series with English subtitles outside Asia, along with the two Flash series, under the name Nyarko-san: Another Crawling Chaos.[8] A DVD containing a short original video animation based on the short story "Easy Way to Kill Enemies" (やさしい敵の仕留め方, Yasashii Teki no Shitome-kata) was offered to those who purchased all the BD/DVD volumes of the first season.[9] NIS America licensed the series in North America and released on subtitled Blu-ray Disc on April 15, 2014.[10][11][12][13][14]

The series has received mixed reviews. Aiden Foote from THEM Anime Reviews gave the first season (Nyarko-san: Another Crawling Chaos) a 3 out of 5 stars rating. In his review, Foote says that the anime "should have been a whole better [sic] and could well have been" citing the over-pandering as an issue. He went on to say that a character as well-liked as Nyaruko deserved more when it came to a love interest.[22]

I'm not too fond of the show, it repeats the same kamen rider W joke far too oft to be funny and has no bearing on character development or story. The characters themselves are relatively flat, unchanging through both seasons, but they have some charm to them because of the voice actors.

In short, I think it's a niche otaku anime for people who like pop culture references with a few gags. I have found it rather dull and the execution of the jokes left me desiring more than just a typical tsukomi.

Watched it. 0 points in horror if that's what you're expecting. The plot doesn't go much further than "my everyday life with a bunch of monsters which tag along on everything I do in convenient female human forms."
Worth checking out if you are interested in lighthearted comedy, though. (A large part of the jokes are based on the relationships between characters, but aside from that it's a matter of personal preferences).

just a bit curious and also interested, but what would you actually rate highly for horror for you in anime, ive watchedseveral horror anime and none really made me look around in the dark in the slightest except for the first arc Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni which actually made me curl my toes and body in futile self protection. I would like the idea of better animated horror since most reality horror movies are very cheesy unless they go into the unknown like aliens or demons

I've more or less given up - Horror is not a popular anime genre,so new series don't come out often enough for there to be a reasonable chance of a good series every so often. Most series tagged with it fall either into the mystery category(e.g. trying to catch a serial murderer/deduce who he is) or gore(e.g. lots of people exploding into pools of blood, spraying their brain out, eaten by monsters, etc.),while I consider real horror to be extremely plot-centric while balancing between keeping things hidden and keeping things scary. Even when it's a balance of both(which filters out the vast majority of titles),the design often makes them fall short on some point or another, often several together(e.g. too focused on non-horror content, not properly making the responsible characters horrifying, giving characters a constant way to fight back with a high chance of success).

I think visual novels,as a medium, excel in this category: Often, they will cause you to feel much more related to a character than a normal novel or movie could, thus making you,in a sense,"fear for your own life". They still fall short due to their low amount, and while not being immune to any of the problems animes have,it opens up new troubles(like dealing with sexual content); But I feel in general,a good-made vn will often deal with those situations much better, which makes it really enjoyable to read.

I'm not sure if you were around back then, but when I did weekly spotlights,a short horror vn I recommended to people new to visual noels was Phenomeno. I think it's a great way to see if you're interested in what horror vns have to offer.

Horror is a very popular genre in anime. Kiseijuu and Tokyo Ghoul are recent shows that I can think off the top of my head. Though Tokyo Ghoul's manga is better and the anime is actually pretty bad and the second season suffers from a the same issues and more including TERRIBLE animation quality and in fact is more sped up then the first season. Kisejuu is fantastic and worth watching.

Those are pretty light-hearted compared to Kara no Kyoukai and Psycho Pass. But even so the presence of blood and death, torture, murder or the supernatural still isnt enough to make these shows truly thrilling, becase you know that at the end of the day it's all just animation, unlike movies. Corpse Party comes pretty close though.

hehe so much text, I don't know myself how I would word what horror counts to me but as I said about the first arc of Higurashi the part where it makes it seem as something is following but it never shows it and it talks about how the only way to keep yourself safe is to not turn around, that part creeped me out a lot, I was too scared to turn around and look at my sister who was watching behind me.

but aw, I was hoping you would have some good anime recommendations, one explanation that I read was related to how Japan sees horror differently than most countries as they have a very diverse culture with higher beings and demons, so they don't consider most of that horror and more like Lore, but mystery and murder by humans is what they consider horror.

Oh lol yes, but I only started liking it after 3rd episode, the anime is really crazy, pervert and very very funny, I laughed a lot watching both seasons, I hope for 3rd season. The story is a no sense, but this make it only even funnier, characters are perverts and make the anime very cheerful, if you plan to watch it, try to watch at least 3-4 episodes, you may not like it just by watching 1 or 2, because of the no sense happening around.

Nyaruko basically is sent to Earth to protect it from that Lovecraft universe monsters who want to dominate the world to get all pervert stuff related to hentai, Doujinshi, yaoi, yuri, etc they have in Japan. Then she falls in love with the main character, there is also another girl like Nyaruko, her name is Cthugha, who loves Nyaruko and always tries to seduce her, and make pervert things and jokes. They can also travel in universe for more than the speed of light, she also has a pet that looks like a mini dragon, who can only say "mi mi mi".

I can compare this anime with "Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai" in terms of perverseness and crazy characters, jokes and fun, but this one I said is even more perverted, they even show tits in anime besides all the jokes, actions, and other stuff and it's not hentai, in Nyaruko is basically pervert jokes and actions.

"H. P. Lovecraft's works are actually races of aliens"
how can you use the works of HP Lovecraft and still be so similar to every other anime ever made. It just seems incredibly generic. I'm just reading though, haven't actually seen any episode, yet.

If the aliens were from earth, are they still aliens?
It wasn't just that though, just didn't feelt like quoting everything.
The point i wanted to make was that while i was reading about it, i could pretty much see were this anime was going, because all of it has been done before. high school, aliens, romantic comedy with the boy shes probably going to have to save constantly being the obvious love interest although nothing really happens...
