UPCOMING EVENTS AT LAKE MEAD NATIONAL RECREATION AREA DEC 6 TO JAN 1

BOULDER CITY, Nevada – The following events are happening at Lake Mead National Recreation Area Dec. 6 to Jan. 1.

Make s’mores at park headquarters Dec 6

Gather around a campfire and make s’mores Dec. 6 during the Boulder City Santa’s Electric Night Parade at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area Park Headquarters, 601 Nevada Way, Boulder City. Smokey Bear, Puddle the Blue Goose, Mojave Max, Otto Otter and the “S’more Making Team” will pass out hot chocolate, marshmallows, graham crackers and chocolate from 4 to 7 p.m. The parade kicks off at 4:30 p.m. and includes National Park Service vehicles and a special float with other federal and state agencies.

Parade of Lights Dec 6

Around 25 boats adorned with lights and holiday decorations will participate in the annual Lake Mead Boat Owner’s Association’s Parade of Lights Dec. 6. Decorated boats will be on display at Las Vegas Boat Harbor and Lake Mead Marina from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Visitors can vote for their favorite decorations. At 6:30 p.m., the boats will depart the marinas and parade across the Boulder Basin. Visitors can watch the departure from the marinas or view the parade from Boulder Beach. Water Shortage Discussion Dec 6

Join Daniel Bunk, the supervisory hydrologist for the Bureau of Reclamation’s Lower Colorado Region, at 2 p.m. Dec. 6 at the Lake Mead Visitor Center as he discusses water storage capacity in the Colorado River reservoir system and the projections for a possible shortage in 2016. The program is hosted by the Lake Mead Institute and Western National Parks Association. For more information, call 702-293-8990.

Calico Racing Hoover Dam Marathon Dec 13

Nearly 1,000 runners will race through Lake Mead National Recreation Area along the River Mountains Loop and Historic Railroad trails from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 13. The Calico Racing Hoover Dam Marathon will start and finish at Boulder Beach. Visitors to Lake Mead may experience delays along Lakeshore Road and additional traffic at Boulder Beach. The Dock of Lights Dec 13

The Dock of Lights is at 7 p.m. Dec. 13 at Callville Bay. Visit Santa and Mrs. Claus, enjoy hot chocolate and stroll along the dock to see boats decorated with holiday lights. Food will be available at the Fountain Sight Lounge beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Lake Mead Visitor Center Open House Dec 13-14

Lake Mead National Recreation Area and the Western National Parks Association are holding an open house at the Lake Mead Visitor Center Dec. 13 and 14. Enjoy a 15 percent discount on purchases both days. Come into the visitor center for hot drinks and free treats. A portion of proceeds from sales will help support interpretive and educational programs at Lake Mead National Recreation Area. For more information, call 702-293-8990. Visitor center hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Visitor Center Closed Dec 25, Jan 1

The Lake Mead Visitor Center will be closed Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.

Ranger Chat: Public Lands, Treasures of Southern Nevada Dec 27-28

Learn about the variety of public lands that surround the Las Vegas valley at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Dec. 27 and 28 at the Lake Mead Visitor Center.
