CELEBRATE NATIONAL PUBLIC LANDS DAY, SEPT 27

BOULDER CITY, Nev. – Lake Mead National Recreation Area is hosting a variety of events and offering free entry into the park Sept. 27 in celebration of National Public Lands Day.

The day, celebrated by federal land areas across the U.S., began in 1994 to encourage caring for the nation’s shared lands. Today, it is the largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance publicly held lands for the greater enjoyment and enrichment of all who visit.

In addition to volunteering, park rangers encourage visitors to enjoy Lake Mead National Recreation Area’s 1.5 million acres of public land available for boating, fishing, hiking, photography and sightseeing.

Fee-free day

Entrance fees will be waived at Lake Mead National Recreation Area Sept. 27 for National Public Lands Day. Fees for camping, lake use or use of concessions still apply.

National Public Lands Day Government Wash Litter Clean-up

Celebrate National Public Lands Day 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 27 by joining Lake Mead staff in cleaning up Government Wash, an area that was heavily used by summer visitors. National Public Lands Day Laughlin Event

Rangers will be at the National Public Lands Day event at the Colorado River Heritage Greenway Park and Trails in Laughlin. This event includes a fun run at 7 a.m. (register at (702) 298-3413) and exhibit and activities from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. These activities include: live horse education and horse rides, fishing activities, stewardship scavenger hunt, volunteer stewardship project (register at (702) 277-2770), live desert animals and even a raffle at 12:30 p.m. and 1:45 p.m. at the Pyramid Day Use area. There will be two ranger-led hikes, at the event. At 11 a.m., join the moderate one-hour history hike to learn about the rich history of the area from the geologic past to the building of Davis Dam. Departs from the Equestrian Parking Lot. At 1 p.m., join the moderate one-hour desert plants and animals hike to learn about the many plant and animal species in the area. Departs from the North Reach Trailhead.

Weed Out Intruders

Volunteers are needed to help remove invasive fountaingrass at Big Bend of the Colorado State Recreation Area in Laughlin from 7 to 10 a.m. Sept. 27. To sign up, call 702-515-5457. Volunteers should bring work gloves. Tools and refreshments will be provided. For safety, volunteers must be 14 years or older. The Fountaingrass Control Initiative is a project of the Sounder Nevada Cooperative Weed Management Area.

Bookstore Discount

At the Lake Mead Visitor Center, the Western National Parks Association Bookstore will offer a 15 percent discount on bookstore items, such as books, postcards, T-shirts and other gifts. Other discounts will be available, as well. Open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, call 702-293-8990.

Saints and Sinners Half Marathon, Team Relay and 2-mile run/walk

Around 900 runners will race through Lake Mead National Recreation Area starting at 7 a.m. Sept. 27 for the Saints and Sinners Half Marathon and Team Relay. The marathon and relay begin in Boulder City. The course descends to Lake Mead National Recreation Area and follows the Historic Tunnel Trail, which offers spectacular views of the lake. The race continues along the River Mountains Loop Trail and finishes at Boulder Beach. The 2-mile run/walk is a gentle downhill course along River Mountains Loop Trail to Boulder Beach.
