Community member Renee Barton led an effort to revegetate the barren swale between Jane Addams Middle School and NE 110th Street. She consulted experts including TCA leadership, obtained funding, and worked with professionals to come up with a plan. Last October, over 40 volunteers, including many students from Nathan Hale High School and TCA members, joined Renee and restoration professionals to plant hundreds of seedlings and saplings.
Several months ago, amidst the region’s ongoing drought, Renee determined that to ensure survival of the juvenile plants, they would need to be watered over summer. But how would she get water to the site?
Renee procured a sturdy wagon and eight 4-gallon buckets. Several days each week, she filled them with water at her house and hauled to the site, more than a block away. She carefully watered each plant; she even used a soil penetrating device with openings along the side to get water down into the root zones of more deeply rooted plants. The plants are flourishing and, as they settle in, they should be more drought tolerant in future years. Many kudos, to you Renee!
