Canoe Island, ctd.

      There's a small rock reef visible off the south side of Canoe.   These rocks absorb heat in the early spring sun and melt the winter ice around them, creating a nice open water opportunity for a young college freshman, home for spring vacay in a small sports car who got too close to the island while buzzing around on the ice, and damn near went in.   It was just the front wheels, and the car was light, and I was able to put it in reverse, get out and push the wheels out of the water.   

      I fled the scene, talking to myself.

       And to conclude this insular topic, am told that my sixth great grandfather, Sgt. Jesse Barker, who marched with Burgoyne on Ticonderoga, is buried on Diamond id.

        Well, almost the last message.  Rainy days at the Lake would give the hotel/motel owners fits, wondering what to do with the guests.  Two days of rain would clear some places out.  

      We were pretty good water skiers back then, doing tricks, dopey things, and found that the guests were captive audiences for our water ski shows.   Afterwards we'd pass the hat at the dock and make a few bucks for gas money.  

      But the capper was one day performing in front of Happy Hour at Canoe Island Lodge.   Rain and bourbon everywhere, a great show out front of them on the Lake.   Everybody was settling down when one of our guys appeared on skis coming down the Lake in a gorilla suit!   The fans went wild.  He did a few buzzes and skied off, to the delight of the Canoe Id. Lodge folks.
