Friction within the Jewish American community over Israel-Palestine is nothing new.  But tensions have been building over the past five years in response to a rightward drift in Israeli politics and Donald Trump’s support for that shift.  We examine the dynamics of this changing scene from three perspectives:

Uri Talil is an Israeli and LA Jews for Peace member who has been fighting the occupation for over 40 years.  Uri will describe the present state of Israeli politics and society focusing on how Israeli trends, reinforced by U.S. government policies, drive changes in the Jewish American attitude towards Israel in general and Israel dispossession of Palestinians in particular.

Eric Gordon is a LA Jews for Peace member who has opposed the occupation for over 20 years.  Eric will explain how traditional Jewish American liberalism causes so many Jewish Americans and their organizations to recoil from religious and political Zionism, and the resulting Israeli government messianism, authoritarianism, religious and gender discrimination, Jewish chauvinism, and rejection of Palestinian rights and aspirations.  And how this liberalism leads to the rejection of conservative evangelical politics in the U.S. regarding Israel and Palestine.

Pesach Chananiah is an IfNotNow leader who came to oppose the occupation through researching displacement on Skid Row and making a connection to the Palestinian plight.  Pesach will describe the IfNotNow strategy of building a mass movement to end the Jewish American community's support of the occupation and ensure freedom and dignity for all Palestinians and Israelis.  IfNotNow’s method is to bring the issue of the Occupation into the mainstream American discourse.  That will pressure Jewish American institutions to change their position which in-turn will move the U.S. government to stop its support of the occupation.
