Specificallysports management as a profession involves the oversight of nearly all aspects of an athletic program. This may include athletic training, providing resources for athlete education, ensuring team and coach compliance, even fostering interest for your team or club in local communities.

As a sports manager, your daily responsibilities can sometimes require a working knowledge of fields like law, accounting, taxation, public relations, and more. Therefore, an equally wide variety of academic degrees can prepare you for the position itself.

Knowledge and understanding of sports will be crucial to help you become a sports manager. Taking a more entry-level role working within sports on the business side will help you see the daily work of sports management and be better prepared to step into that role. Most people will need to work their way up to become successful as a sports manager.

ESPN alone reported over 12 million paying users at the beginning of 2021 for its online streaming service ESPN+, which represents only a small percentage of the total sports viewership volume. As long as these positive growth curves continue, we can expect the popularity and outlook for sports management careers to follow suit.

Sports manager job duties can vary by sport and work environment. Some sports managers specialize in one specific industry area, such as public relations, while others spend time learning multiple disciplines. All sports management positions focus on the business side of sports.

Determining the job outlook for sports managers can be challenging with the wide range of available jobs in different industries. However, the entertainment and sports industry, where most sports managers work, is expected to experience tremendous growth over the next decade.

For example, professionals looking to work for teams in the National Football League or the National Basketball Association will be required to obtain league-specific certifications. On the other hand, sports managers working with combat sports like boxing and mixed martial arts will need to obtain a separate certification.

A few states, including Maryland, California and Tennessee, require sports managers to pass a test and obtain a state license. The easiest way to determine if your state requires sports managers to get a certificate is to contact the state professional regulation board.

Parents by nature are protective of their children, only wanting the best for them while watching them succeed in their lives. In Sports Management, we often see different levels of involvement of the parent. In certain cases parents can be a great addition to the management circle and in others, they can ruin the career of the athlete before it has started.

Another great example of perfect cohesion is Alyson Felix, the princess of Track & Field. In her career, she has proven she is a medal threat over 5 events (100,200,400, 4x100 and 4x400) She is managed by her brother Wes, who himself was track athlete for sometime. Wes, one of the younger agents on the circuit works very hard and is there for his sister, not only as her older brother, but also as her business manager. One of the most memorable moments in my career was seeing Wes get onto the track to go pick his client and sister off the track after she fell and was injured. To me, this is what sports management should be, caring for your clients and being there. Wes did what many people would never think to do. It goes to show what kind of person he is, and even more so what a great agent and brother he has become.

Family & Money

In November 2014, it was announced that NHL star Jack Johnson was forced to declare bankruptcy after his parents bought themselves a house in California and borrowed upwards of 15 million dollars towards future earnings with high interest rates. Like many kids, Jack listened to his parents and sought their guidance. He had so much trust and faith in them, that upon signing his lucrative contract worth nearly 30 million dollars, he directly handed power of attorney to his mother, who he thought would act in his best interest. Unfortunately for him, she acted in hers and he is now being ridiculed and mocked for making such a poor decision. To any athlete who makes a comfortable living, I always suggest to them to work with a financial planner and or adviser who can help make money work for them and not against them (Entry to come on this topic soon)

It is your responsibility to read and understand the responsibilities of managers, the rules of the sport you will participate in and all relevant sections of the Texas law and rules for combative sports.

If you have ever been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor (other than a minor traffic violation) or pleaded guilty or no contest (resulting in a deferred adjudication) to any in-state, out-of-state or federal criminal offense, you must provide a completed Criminal History Questionnaire (PDF) along with your application materials.

The department will conduct a criminal history background check on all persons who apply for a license. Criminal convictions are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Licenses may be denied based on the nature of the conviction and how long prior to the application the conviction occurred. Depending on your criminal history, a review can take from one to six weeks to complete.

Individuals may request TDLR review their criminal background before actually applying for a license. TDLR uses the same process for this pre-application evaluation as the process described below. See the Criminal History Evaluation Letter page for more information.

Please see the Guidelines for License Applicants with Criminal Convictions, which describe the process that TDLR uses to determine whether a criminal conviction renders an applicant an unsuitable candidate for the license, or whether a conviction warrants revocation or suspension of a license previously granted.
