Start Turning Your Nonprofit Job into Your Expertise

Cool People Care co-founder Sam Davidson has some helpful suggestions about using your on-the-job knowledge to make some off-the-job money.

We all know the laments of many a nonprofit employee. Low pay (lower than many corporate equivalents), long hours, and limited benefits (I’m assuming your 501(c)3 doesn’t offer stock options) mean that your passion is driving you at many times. But, it can be hard to convince your landlord or the electric company to let you pay your bills with passion this month.

A lot of people in the nonprofit industry, then, need to find a way to make ends meet, save for the future, or earn more cash to do what they want. This can be hard, of course, as picking up part-time retail work may not be worth the hassle and launching your own venture may not be realistic at the moment.

Nonprofit Job Interviews: The Mission Question

Ken Goldstein of The Nonprofit Consultant Blog gives some tips for acing a tricky interview question.

Clearly one of the greatest differences between employment in the nonprofit and for-profit worlds is the concept of working towards a mission beyond the bottom line. Affinity for a mission, and serving a greater purpose, are part of the trade-off for lower salaries and lack of bonuses, etc., in the nonprofit sector. But job seekers – especially those new to the nonprofit sector – often forget the importance of this when interviewing for a nonprofit job.

The mission question is a part of every nonprofit job interview, not just for front-line social workers, but for all staff, including back-office accounting and administrative jobs. Sometimes the hiring manager will clearly ask, “What is it about our mission that attracts you?” Just as often, the mission question is implied in questions like, “Why did you choose to apply for this job?” or “What experience do you have with clients like ours?”

How to Become a Fundraiser

Gayle Roberts shares her thoughts on the daunting task of breaking into nonprofit fundraising.

Welcome to the land of nonprofit fundraising: we need you! Look around; it’s a complex world where people feel isolated, powerless and fearful. From threats of global terrorism to global warming, today’s challenges seem overwhelming. Like you, my heart breaks when I see someone forced to live on the streets or go without health care. There must be a way to empower people, give them hope, and change lives for the better, but what is it?

"All men dream but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes to make it possible."
