Dear All,
I am happy to announce you the
4th European Conference on Coastal Lagoon
Research
Research and Management for the Conservation of Coastal Lagoon
Ecosystems, South - North comparisons
the second announcement is now published on line:
http://www.ecolag.univ-montp2.fr/lagoon-conference
We
organise this conference in Montpellier from 14-18 December
2009
Registration and Abstract submission are now open
Early-Bird fee and Abstract submission before 30 June
2009.
We hope you are interested in this
conference and are looking forward to meeting you in
Montpellier.
For French speaking, please note that this link
sends you to the English announcement. But, at the bottom of the menu you will
find a French flag allowing you to shift to the announcement in French.
We invite scientists from
socioeconomic and natural sciences and managers working on coastal lagoon
ecosystems worldwide to participate. Globally, the coastal lagoons occupy about
12 % of the coastline and represent an important heritage and provide many
highly valued resources for the local populations. Growth of coastal populations
is very pronounced and the human activities strongly impact the coastal lagoon
ecosystems. Successful conservation of coastal systems requires strengthening
the links between scientists and managers.
This
conference will report on advancements in many different thematic areas of
coastal lagoon research, e.g., biodiversity in lagoon ecosystems, conservation
and valorization of natural heritage, biological adaptations of species to the
gradients and environmental fluctuations that are characteristic for these
transitional water ecosystems and their implications in aquaculture,
environmental and socio-economic impact of sea level rise, etc. Particular
attention will be paid to the factors that determine the water quality in
lagoons comprising its physicochemical, biological and ecological quality
elements. This particularly includes studies on the coupling between watersheds,
lagoon ecosystems and the coastal sea, as well as the studies of sediments and
their associated biota. The conference comprises 13 thematic sessions that are
described below and round table discussions, particularly to collectively define
the future research questions in order to contribute the necessary scientific
information needed for efficient successful conservation of these
ecosystems.
Comparative studies in different regions
are very instructive for learning about unifying concepts, common features and
particularities of the different coastal lagoon ecosystems and their
socioeconomic importance. We particularly invite presentations with comparisons
between the South and the North encompassing comparisons between i) temperate
and boreal systems within Europe, ii) Southern and Northern shores of the
Mediterranean and iii) worldwide along latitudinal gradients ranging from
tropical to polar environments.
