UN General Secretary letter on call for urgent climate change for sign ons

Dear Colleagues,

Considering It is less than a month to UN 2023 SDG summit slated for 18-19 September, 2023 and the Climate Ambition Summit specially convened by the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres. According to the Secretary-General, it is for "leaders from governments, business, cities and regions, civil society, and finance to come with new, tangible, and credible climate action to accelerate the pace of change”. The UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Muhammed, while briefing member States earlier this year stated that the special summit is an opportunity for "“First Movers and Doers” to “tell us how they are responding to the Secretary-General’s call to ‘accelerate’ climate action”. She said the Summit will be organized around “three distinct but interrelated tracks””.

In setting a civil society agenda for the summit and the UN General Secretariat, HEDA Resource Centre and our partners have developed a sign-on letter to be delivered to the UN Secretary-General and his Deputy on civil society and global expectations from the special summits, the SDG summit and 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28).

We are therefore calling on our colleagues, partners and activists from across the globe to review and express solidarity through an endorsement of this letter on or before 9th September, 2023. We shall ensure onward transmission of the signed letter and names of signatory to the UN Secretary-General and Deputy Secretary-General by 11th September, 2023.
