Hello,

I want to thank everyone for their insights with the problem I was having last week. Yesterday I got insight into the problem so I had to change my approach.

The problem came from the fact that I was focused on the data because a spreadsheet already existed and I was trying to avoid having to do data entry. So I just uploaded a spreadsheet into a database. Sloppy when I look back at it.

In the end, we are back to the drawing board doing database normalization because that is the only way to avoid problems down the road. There are too many bottlenecks if we don't normalize the tables and do manual data entry.

Agreed the cost will be exhobitant but it will be a one time cost for a scalable system that works efficiently.

Thanks everyone for letting be this a place where I can get feedback.

Regards,

Truston Ailende

Thanks for your help my brother.

You were right on the normalization of the database.

Thanks for providing me the perspective I needed.

Truston,

Welcome to the real world of business, where Excel rules. Thanks for getting back to us.

As an academic exercise I think the problem (or similar) should be shared with the group. I would love to sink my teeth in it, as am sure others would too.

@Don,

I would love to have uploaded the spreadsheet but my hands are too small for handcuffs :-) that's why I only talked about the problem.

Contract law forbids me from revealing the actual data used with the project.

But I can give this example.

If you have an Excel spreadsheet of tourist locations in Nigeria, how would you move it to a MySQL database whereby the only means of separating the tourist locations is by a space between the entries.

In my case, I was trying to avoid data entry but the project got to too many pain points.

I hope this helps.

Totally understand Truston, no problem.

I just wanted to try my hands using this workflow and a new language I am currently getting familiar with.

excel => csv => $scripting_lang => $database

This got me thinking - I might post a monthly programming challenge to the group, if I can get the time. My mentors from a while ago used it as a way to hone their skills, sort of like sparing in a boxing ring.

Thanks,
Don

@truston I feel Don is trying to talk you into the NoSql option that we suggested. To keep this flow, you may want to share a similar spreadsheet that has no link to your project (you may want to share a spread from some tutorials like 'explore California', you get the idea). Cheers bro.
