ESRC funded CASE PhD studentship, University of Manchester. (+3 or 1+3 routes available)
Applications are invited for an ESRC CASE PhD studentship, beginning September 2015. Candidates should have interest in carrying out research and development in privacy and confidentiality of open synthetic data releases a good quantitative background.
The research project
Synthetic versions of datasets of personal information are often seen as a way to produce open data about people. Researchers use synthetic versions of datasets to prepare their research questions, software codes, etc. prior to gaining access to real data which can be time-consuming and costly. However, synthetic versions of datasets are not without disclosure risks since they are generated from real data and often original variables are left on the datasets to ensure high utility. The PhD will investigate methods for creating synthetic datasets depending on the underlying true data and scope out the types of disclosure risks in synthetic datasets Disclosure risk measures will be developed to quantify the disclosure risks and advanced statistical methods will be used for their estimation. In addition, quantifying data utility will also be considered. There will be a strong Advanced Quantitative Methods element to the PhD.
The research environment
The successful candidate for this ESRC CASE award will be based in the Social Statistics, School of Social Sciences at the University of Manchester for the majority of their time. The candidate will have research supervisors at the University of Manchester (Dr Mark Elliot and Prof Natalie Shlomo) and mentors at the Office for National Statistics (Dr Caroline Tudor and Mr Keith Spicer). The supervisory team will provide guidance and focus on both the academic and practice-related aspects of the project.
Funding and eligibility
This studentship provides full tuition fees at the Home/EU rate and an annual tax free living maintenance allowance for the duration of the award. International students are only eligible for this ESRC studentship if they use Advanced Quantitative Methods (AQM) in their doctoral research. Students who use AQM in their doctoral research may be eligible for an enhanced stipend for the +3 portion of their award.
We will also accept applications from students you do not yet have a masters who would then enter the MSc programme in Social Research Methods and Statistics in 2015-16 (with a non-AQM stipend provided for the masters year) before moving to the PhD programme in September 2016.
