Lafayette Senior Games - Cycling

The Area 4 Agency on Aging has hosted the senior games in Lafayette for 26 years and has included four bicycling events: 1/4 mile race. 1/2 mile race, a 5 mile ride and an untimed leisure ride. Since the games are held at the Amphitheater, mountain biking was added last year. Tom Albitz and I marked a loop course by getting permission from the county to use part of the cross country trail that parallels Burnets Creek and the Wabash. Last year Virtuous Cycles ran the events. We will do one loop of about 3 1/2 miles even though the brochure says 7 miles.
The bike events will be held at 8:00 am on Wednesday, June 13, in the order listed above with mountain biking last of the timed events. Anyone 55 and older is eligible. There were 7 mountain bike riders last year out of the total field of 15-20 cyclists attending. Some had never been on the trail before and it was more than they expected and they might not try that event again, and some really enjoyed it. It would be nice to have more riders this year.
Most riders are not competitive and are just out for the ride so don't feel you have to be at the top of your game to participate.

I have volunteered for this event for several years and it’s lots of fun to help and see the “seniors” at the Amphitheater. If someone doesn’t want to ride the course they can volunteer to help. Just call Pattie Hall at Area IV Agency on Aging to get signed up. I would be there this year but will be out of town on business. Pattie’s number is 765-447-7683.
