TheBarbie movie always planned to include Aqua's "Barbie Girl" song despite the Danish band saying otherwise. Over a year ago, Aqua told the press that their iconic 1997 song "Barbie Girl" would not be featured in the highly-anticipated Barbie movie directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie. Audiences were understandably upset when they found out the match made in heaven wouldn't be happening. However, the Barbie movie will feature a remix by Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice called "Barbie World," as heard briefly at the end of the trailer.
Talking to Rolling Stone, Robbie revealed the Barbie movie soundtrack was always meant to include the "Barbie Girl" song, albeit a remixed version. The actor says it was Gerwig's plan all along to incorporate the iconic song in the movie, especially since she and many others were begging for it. Read what Robbie revealed below:
The dispute between Mattel, the toy company that manufactures the fashion dolls and co-produces the upcoming movie, and Aqua goes way back to 1997, when the "Barbie Girl" song first became a global hit. Mattel, concerned that the song's suggestive lyrics would turn the doll into a sex object and hurt its wholesome brand, filed a lawsuit against Aqua for trademark infringement, which resulted in a counterclaim. Both ended up going nowhere in court, though the relationship between the two sides remains strained to this day.
Over a year ago, Aqua's lead singer Lene Nystrm's manager Ulrich Mller-Jrgensen said their "Barbie Girl" song wouldn't be used in the movie. However, it was Gerwig's plan all along to incorporate the iconic song. It's a wise choice by the director since it's nearly impossible to imagine a big-screen adaptation of Barbie without it. It's also smart to update the song with a modern remix since the original lyrics, which refer to Barbie as a "blonde bimbo girl," don't exactly mesh with Gerwig's movie, which explores complex themes like existential malaise, imperfection, and identity.
"I was like, 'Greta, how are we going to incorporate this song? We can't do a Barbie movie and not have a nod to Aqua's 'Barbie Girl.' It has to be in there,'" Margot said. "And [Greta] was like, 'Don't worry, we're going to find a cool way to incorporate it.'"
When Greta broke the news to Margot, she was beyond thrilled. "When she was like, 'Guess who's going to do the remix of Aqua's "Barbie Girl"? Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice.' I was like, 'Together? Are you joking?!' I just knew immediately that all my girlfriends were going to lose their minds," Margot said.
