Position reports to the Chair of Engineering and is primarily responsible for providing instruction for assigned courses. As general duties of the position, an NCSSM instructor is expected to plan and develop an instructional program that helps students assimilate content and skills specific to each course; to develop and communicate clear course objectives and goals to students; to structure and manage an environment conducive to learning; to maintain the condition of classroom equipment and monitor and disseminate supplies of consumable laboratory materials; to regularly monitor and evaluate student progress, providing them with resources and feedback on their performance; to hold tutorial sessions and/or office hours as outlined by the department and in response to student needs; and to model for students responsibility to self and others.
These expectations will necessarily be extended to the multiple different teaching formats that are supported by the department, including formats for broadcast, remote, hybrid and online teaching as well as in-person instruction on the Durham campus. The expectation is that this instructor will lead the robotics initiative, both competition and in-class instruction, on the Durham campus. Instructors will also teach courses in another of the departmental disciplines (Engineering or Computer Science) based on the skill set, background, and interest of the instructor.
Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities for this ECS faculty position include basic programming skills, the use of educational technology to deliver interactive courses in both in-person and remote formats, the ability to design course curricula, and experience mentoring students in robotics competitions and oversight of competitive robotics teams at the high school level, perhaps including classroom instruction in robotics design and construction.
Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position also include experience with classroom instruction in either engineering or computer science. A preferred robotics and engineering applicant would have a familiarity with Engineering Design as a Process and its application to a major primary branch of Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil) or secondary field (e.g Aerospace, Environmental, Biomedical) that can be suitably introduced to a high school audience. Primary departmental interest is for instruction in Aerospace Engineering. A preferred robotics and computer science applicant will have the ability to code in one or more modern programming languages (Java, C, but with a preference for Python) and familiarity with current computer science topics.
Teaching experience in robotics or oversight of a robotics build activity like those associated with competitive robotics competitions. Classroom teaching experience in engineering or computer science, preferably with secondary students or with undergraduates at the freshman/sophomore level; preparation for teaching a diverse student population as demonstrated by training and experience.
Vacation: EHRA Faculty earn from 14 days to 26 days per year based on years of state service. Leave accruals for part-time and less than 12 month employees are pro-rated. Leave is earned monthly.

The position is a full-time, ten-month faculty appointment in the Extended Learning division at the NCSSM-Durham campus, with full benefits through the state of North Carolina. The position reports to the NCSSM Director of Instructional Leadership for the NCSSM Connect program and is responsible for providing instruction in Biology through the NCSSM Connect program.
The NCSSM Connect program offers live, synchronous virtual courses taught by NCSSM faculty to students in their local high schools across North Carolina. During class, Connect instructors use group activities and cutting-edge instructional technology to facilitate active participation, with project-based learning and cross-site collaboration with students from around the state. Students are able to interact with others from the mountains to the coast. Our NCSSM Connect program allows smaller, rural schools to offer AP and honors-level courses that may otherwise be unavailable.
