after I read a post about a problem similar to mine (here for example: -insider-program/windows-mail-doesn-t-sync-with-custom... I tried to install other email client app (mozilla's thunderbird, windows mail) with no success. On windows Mail it doesn't work either.

@zfriedman I have had the same problem since update to windows 11 also. Gmail into Outlook 2019 doesnt work whether I use IMAP or POP. The first time it didnt work I thought it may have been my google/gmail password so I changed it and it worked - but only briefly (few days). It no longer works and no amount of changing gmail settings etc in Outlook is fixing the problem. Have you had any luck?

@johnodau I'm having the same issue with Gmail and Outlook 365 on my new PC with Windows 11. Trying to add my gmail account to outlook using the automatic settings doesn't work. I get the following error "Log onto incoming mail server (IMAP): The server refused the connection." and "Send test email message: The server responded: 421 Cannot connect to SMT"

I've tried all the suggested fixes, but to no avail. This is puzzling to me as I would've thought Outlook would be compatible with Gmail. I've spent 3 hours troubleshooting and searching the forums for different solutions.

I have Outlook for Mac and have been unable to add a new Gmail Account with POP Settings. It was tricky to get to the IMAP/POP setup screen in Tools > Accounts, but once there, I can enter in all the details. When I click on Add Account, no success. Has anyone else had any success with POP setup in Outlook for Mac? Frustrated to say the least!

Hi @Patricia Hennessey ,
Welcome to our forum.
Considering your issue may be more related to Outlook desktop client, I added the Outlook tag to solve your issue better, thanks for your understanding.

Don't know if you fixed this yet or not, but I figured it out. Basically, with Google 2-Step verification, you need to create an App Password to use when setting up POP Gmail in Outlook for Mac. Just login to your Google account - go to your Security settings and look for App Password - use the program to generate a password key - this is the one you will use in Outlook as your PASSWORD and it should work right away. Believe me, I had to contact MS Support to figure this out. Good luck!

This issue isn't resolved yet. I'll give your suggestion a try and see how that goes. I hadn't turned on the two-step verification process on one of my email accounts. I've done that now, so I'll set some time aside to make the changes you mentioned and see how that goes. Thanks for the feedback and advice! Patty ;-)

Basically, this is not a MAC or OUTLOOK issue - this is a GOOGLE issue. Remember, Outlook just collects mail from Google POP server - it's a tool. Mac is just an operating system. Google is the controlling the authorization to do this process.

HOW TO SETUP OUTLOOK ON MAC - In Google, you need to create an App Password (not your Google Gmail password - that's different) to use when setting up POP Gmail in Outlook for Mac. To do this - login to your Google account - go to "Manage your Google Account" by clicking on you icon top right corner. On the next screen, click on SECURITY. In the section that says "Signing in to Google" under 2-Step Verification, you will find "App Passwords". Click the drop-down for Select app and choose "Mail" and then under Select device choose MAC. Click GENERATE and that is your new password for Outlook for Mac.

In Outlook, setup your POP account normally through the GMAIL instructions - make sure you turn on POP in you GMAIL settings. Now, instead of using your GMAIL password, you will use your spanking new GENERATED password.

What's your specific meaning of "tricky to get to the IMAP/POP setup screen"?
Actually, I have tested on my Outlook for Mac (version 16.46) and found I could set up my Gmail account with pop settings normally, here are my detailed steps:

Please kindly check if your steps have any differences with mine. If you still need further assistance, please provide me with more information about it(client version, configuration steps etc.). If your issue has any update, please feel free to post back.

That doesn't work for me. When I follow the steps, I receive an error when I try to create the account. "Unable to sign in. Check your credentials and try again." I know my email account and password are correct because I have logged into Google several times to verify. There is an issue with POP and Outlook for Mac.

Thanks for your update. I'm also testing on Outlook for Mac, so what's the version of your Outlook for Mac(), please first ensure that you have updated to the latest version.
Could you configure other pop account on your Outlook(such as Outlook.com or others)?
If you could add other pop account in your Outlook, the issue may be related to your Gmail account itself, have you turned on the 2-step verification of it? It's suggested to check your account setting in your web mail and created the App password to test if your account could be added normally with it in Outlook(Manage your Goggle account>Security>Sign to Goggle>2-step verification).

I have tried setting up my gmail account as POP on two computers. My Mac Desktop is still on Catalina Version 10.15.7 and Microsoft Outlook is Version 16.43 (20110804). On this computer, I have my personal gmail account setup as POP and there are no issues. This was established way back when I originally installed Microsoft Outlook for Mac 2011. I recently upgraded to Microsoft 365 and my email accounts didn't have any negative impact at that time. I've not switched to the new version of Outlook on this computer because I read that POP doesn't work with this release. When I attempt to setup a new gmail account as POP, it doesn't work. My configurations in gmail are exactly the same as the other gmail account that does work.

My MacBook Air has been upgraded to Big Sur Version 11.1 and Microsoft Outlook is Version 16.45 (21011103). If I try to add my gmail account as POP, I receive the same error message as I do with my Mac Desktop (noted above). If I switch to the "New Outlook" format, I don't even have the option of selecting POP. The only accounts supported are Office 365, Outlook.com, Google and iCloud. That same pop up window shows COMING SOON: Exchange, IMAP, Yahoo. So, I essentially cannot move to the "New Outlook" format because my personal company uses an Exchange Account for all of my contacts and calendar.

A couple of things to take note of: 1) I use an Exchange Account to capture my calendar and contacts because a few years back, Microsoft stopped supporting the sync capability between Outlook and iPhone. I had to use an Exchange Account if I wanted to continue to use Microsoft Outlook to capture my contacts and calendar and have that sync with my iPhone. 2) If Microsoft is going to release new versions and "new" looks of Outlook, then they should be sure that it works with customer configurations. Right now, I cannot setup a POP email account on the old look of Microsoft Outlook and it's not even an option in the "New Outlook", and I'm not sure if this will even be available. I also am not able to use my Exchange Account until Microsoft enables that feature in the "New Outlook".

Thanks for the latest update and information. I turned on the 2-step verification with the gmail account and then attempted to add the POP account to Microsoft Outlook for Mac and I'm still getting the error message that the user credentials/password is not valid. So, not sure what to do next.

Hi @Patricia Hennessey ,
Thanks for your update, could you log in your gmail automatically instead of configure it with pop manually? As I know, we usually could configure the gmail account in Outlook 365 automatically, in order to further confirm your issue, it's suggested to log in your Gmail account in Outlook 365 directly.
I mentioned that you have turned on 2-step verification, have you also set the app password? If not, it's suggested to set a app password and re-login your account with the new app password to check.
Also, as mentioned above, the issue may also occur when we haven't turn on "less secure app access", please try to turn on it to test if the issue has any difference.

Actually, the article as you mentioned means the New Outlook for Mac, and we could switch to New/back via this slider:

As I know, when we try to add Gmail account in New Outlook for Mac, it's indeed configured automatically and there's no option that support us configure the account with pop manually now, So based on your description before, if you still could find the manual configuration options, I think you may not work with New Outlook for Mac.

In New Outlook for Mac, the Gmail account would be configured automatically when we try to add it, and there seems to be no option that could configure it manually. According to your description before, you still could find the manual configuration options, I think you may not work with New Outlook for Mac.

Hello...I've tried all different combinations and possibilities. Nothing works. My MacBook Air has been upgraded to Big Sur Version 11.1 and Microsoft Outlook is Version 16.45 (21011103). Whether I have the old Outlook or switch to the New Outlook, it doesn't work. If I switch to the "New Outlook" format, I don't even have the option of selecting POP. The only accounts supported are Office 365, Outlook.com, Google and iCloud. That same pop up window shows COMING SOON: Exchange, IMAP, Yahoo. I want a POP email account, not IMAP. Right now, I have two emails sitting in my gmail account. I've setup the Gmail account in the New Outlook format and it doesn't work. I'm sure if I switch fully to IMAP, it would work. However, that is not what I want. see attached.
