As I stated I'm moving to a VPS for my mail server

I'm using How To Forge's "perfect" server guide

I've tried Debian 6 as well as Ubuntu 10.04
http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect-server-ubuntu-10.04-lucid-lynx-ispconfig-3-p5

and get all the way through only to find that smtp is listening only on
the localhost ip address and not my public facing one.

This is using Postfix and I'm not sure how or where to make changes so I
can listen to port 25 from my external ip address. Any help would be
appreciated.

I think this is what you are looking for... the inet parameter in
master.cf

**********************
inet The service listens on a TCP/IP socket and is accessible
via the network.

The service name is specified as host:port,
denoting the host and port on which new
connections should be accepted. The host part
(and colon) may be omitted. Either host or
port may be given in symbolic form (host or
service name) or in numeric form (IP address or
port number). Host information may be enclosed
inside "[]", but this form is not necessary.

Examples: a service named 127.0.0.1:smtp
or ::1:smtp receives mail via the loopback
interface only; and a ser- vice named 10025
accepts connections on TCP port 10025 via all
interfaces configured with the inet_interfaces
parameter.
**************************

Note that you are not supposed to use this method for setting it to
loopback... they just use it as an example. Also check in main.cf for
the setting "inet_interfaces = loopback-only" and be sure that it is
not set.

Good luck!

Sorry I should have stated, I did check master.cf and had "inet_interface
= all:25" set by default and main.cf "inet_ineterfaces = all"

If there is no specific topic maybe someone can differences between the
different GUI's, KDE, Gnome, et al. I would like to learn why one or the
other is better for this or that.

I have installed Mint11 LXDE but leaving room for a couple other
installs. I tried Mint 12 and their rolling distro but could not get a
good install with either one.

I would prefer to stick with one distro as this is going to be in my
shop office mosty used for the Web, Faxs through a modem, and some CAD
if I can find a suitable package.

Thanks,Ed.

Have you tried http://www.ribbonsoft.com/qcad.html ?

I installed it for a little project, but I am not an experienced CAD
user, and found it difficult. Figured maybe if I had known what I was
doing, I might have liked it better. Or not.

One of the things I would like to discuss tonight are some technical issues regarding a 'touchy' family matter...

...In spite of all my warnings my daughter bought an iPod Touch.  She has a laptop with ubuntu 10.4 and I will not allow her to boot and run Windows on my house/office network.   So if there are any folks that have experience with this device maybe we could outline my options.

Regarding apple I agree with Stallman

thanks

Quick google says that 10.04 should work out of the box with the Ipod
Touch

Looks like there's no easy way to do it in 10.04 that will allow you to
sync your music (last link prevents music sync.) if you're willing to
upgrade to Karmic you should be able to do this

If you are willing to use banshee, it has support for syncing with
ipods. The version of ipod depends on the version of banshee. One would
have to look in the repositories and the banshee wiki to determine if
the version that you need is available in the normal repositories.
Sometimes newer versions are available in "backports" or a ppa when
using ubuntu.

I really was liking banshee when I was using it. I will definitely
install it on the 'family' computer/server when I get it running again.

One might also consider upgrading from 10.04 if needed, as there have
been many kernel and other improvements since.
