I'm experimenting with a Tiling Window Manager (bspwm)

Hey everybody,

Not long ago, I became interesting in Tiling Window Managers as an alternative to the Desktop Metaphor. A Tiling Window Manager can take the place of the Gnome, KDE, Cinnamon or XFCE (et cetera) desktop environments.

At first, it looked very confusing, but now that I've used one... I really like it!

I recently got bspwm working.

It took me a bit of time to figure out, but now I have a basic configuration that I like. By the time the third Thursday rolls around in March, I may be ready to give a presentation on it. Though, it may be quite outside normal desktop Linux usage and I'm not sure how much interest there would be.

I'll be doing a few videos on it between now and then, so you can see what a Tiling Window Manager is like to use.

Do any of you use a Tiling Window Manager (i3, awesome, qtile, xmonad, bspwm) ?

Do you have any interest in seeing a presentation on bspwm, specifically ?

Let me know,

Hi Matthew,

I've been using i3 on my daily driver for about a year now. IMO much more efficient than a traditional DE, especially with *gasp* vim keys. Do you feel there are strong advantages to bspwm over i3? I've yet to try it.

Hey Tim,

Great to hear that you've been using i3wm for a significant amount of time. As I'm just getting into Tiling Window Managers, I don't have any experience with i3wm so can't compare. From what I've read, I believe bspwm is slightly more module, as it uses sxhkd as a separate program to set and use keyboard shortcuts (key bindings).

If you are willing, it be great to have you share your experience with i3wm. Let us know if you'd like to give a presentation (short or long) at an upcoming Linux User Group meeting.
