Maharashtra, which is one of the biggest markets for movies, has a 50% occupancy cap at theatres due to the surge in COVID-19 cases. For a film called Mumbai Saga, this is an essential market. So whatever the movie has earned so far is decent enough given the several limitations.
Set in the 80s and the 90s, Mumbai Saga shows changing faces of Mumbai people by closing mills to make malls and high rise buildings. In the lead, we have John Abraham as Amartya Rao, who is hell-bent on fighting crime on his own, betting it all on his vermillion tikka to protect him from any evil. His vendetta to avenge the attack on his younger brother Arjun (Prateik Babbar) drives the plot of the movie. While the first half sets the background for Abraham and his gritty nature, the second half comprises Officer Vijay Savarkar (Emraan Hashmi) and the OG baddie Mahesh Manjrekar. And Kajal Aggarwal and Anjana Sukhani, the only two leading women in this male-dominated testosterone-fuelled saga, have a side role that is blander than coleslaw.
The movie 'Mumbai Saga' is representative of the kind of filmmaking and features Dharmendra's flicks like 'Jaljala', 'Hukumat', and 'Loha'. Nothing to report, there are just flailing arms, thumping gangs, and gunshots coming at the audience from every angle in these movies. Because the theater has to be informed that its sound system is the greatest in the world and because the composers of the movie's background music have been instructed to create bang-bang music, cotton may need to be placed in the ears. In this situation, some very awful songs have been written. Additionally, background music has been reduced to mere noise.
