        Hello Friends,

Lisa Fitch, who worked at City several years ago doing PR for Dr. Moore, sent me the information below, and the attachments, with a request that I send it to faculty in the sciences who might know students who could benefit.  I have not remembered all the chairs and departments, but hope you will forward this to others who should be included. The basics are in yellow below, but much more is highlighted farther down, in turquoise.  It would be great if an LACC student had this opportunity and could benefit from such an experience!  Thanks for your help!

        Happy New Year, Cristy!

        How are you?

Wanted to pass this on to all the campuses, but I just don't know anyone anymore.

Can you forward this to some folks at City and ask them to spread the word?

This looks like a GREAT opportunity for science and engineering students!

        Dear Colleagues,

I hope all is well. I just wanted to send you a note to inform you that the Transfer-to-Excellence Summer Research Program at UC Berkeley application deadline has been extended to March 1st. We're still looking for community college students in science and engineering for summer internships. If you know students that may be a good fit for our program, please encourage them to apply.

Attached are a program flyer and application packet, and below is an email that you can forward to students. Additional program details, applicant requirements and the online application can be found on the web at: http://www.e3s-center.org/education/edu-tte-reu-appl2.htm

As always, I am happy to answer any questions and look forward to the applicants you will send our way. Thank you for your assistance.

        Kind regards,
        Sharnnia

The Transfer-to-Excellence Summer Research Program at the University of California, Berkeley will be held June 16 - August 12, 2012. This program is open to current community college students interested in pursuing a bachelor's degree in science and engineering and have a GPA of 3.25 or greater. In particular, women, under-represented minorities, first-generation college students, and students from low-income backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Our summer program introduces energy concepts in energy efficient electronic sciences, nanotechnology and nanoscience, and synthetic biology. Summer researchers have the opportunity to join Berkeley researchers who are working in a collaborative and innovative environment to make fundamental breakthroughs in science and engineering.

The program offers each participant a paid 8-week research experience which includes writing a research paper and completing a presentation of the research outcomes. In addition to participating in cutting edge research projects, the program also offers educational activities including seminars, laboratory tours and field trips, as well as one-on-one advising and support for transfer to a 4-year institution. Students also receive a $3,200 stipend, room and meals, and a travel allowance up to $300 to travel to/from Berkeley.
