The United States is made up of many different races, ethnicities,
cultures, etc. but should we consider it curse or a blessing? In
Murphy’s Are We Rome? the topic of the United States’ borders is
brought into comparison with those of Rome, and ultimately it is
decided that the border is not simple a line of division but instead
represents the different aspects that make up the country such as the
political, linguistic, and philosophical feature. Likewise we see the
result of culture clashing in William Shakespeare’s Antony and
Cleopatra, in the relationship Antony, of Rome, and Cleopatra, or
Egypt begin. The borders of the United States represent the clash of
cultures, as well as a sense of security which can be clearly seen
through Antony and Cleopatra, as well as the rest of the roman
soldiers located in the Egypt, occupying a foreign country, yet still
instilling their ideals into the culture.
People from everywhere else in the world arrive here in the United
States because they seek a better life and believe that they can
obtain it here just like the Egyptians believed that allowing the
Romans invade their land. This comparison can first be examined in the
first scene of the first act of Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra,
the arrival of the messenger to Egypt from Rome. There is a trust
between Rome and Egypt that allows a roman to enter and leave Egypt
with no problem whatsoever, similarly to the relationship that the
United States has with Mexico. Each country sends migrants to each
other for many different reasons and ultimately not considering the
effects, which tend to not be one or the other, instead they
differentiate. The messenger int eh first scene is the positive form
of the migrants who travel between countries but on the other hand
there are the soldiers who have been stationed in Egypt, representing
the ill effects of this relationship in border. In a sense it starts
appearing the Rome has overtaken Egypt just like it may appear that
the United States has some control over the Mexican government.
Although these are just false ideas it depicts the fading of the
border in a certain way. The United States is dominated by Hispanic-
Americans which is what appears to be the evident event that will
happen in Egypt, but instead of Hispanics it will be Romans.
