UP FRATERNITY LAUNCHES BOOK

On The Good Side of History: The Alpha Phi Beta Story, will be launched on Monday, April 19, 2010, 3:30 pm, at the Centennial Hall of the Manila Hotel, Rizal Park, Manila.

Written by veteran journalist and biographer Nelson A. Navarro, the book covers the triumphs and tribulations of the Alpha Phi Beta Fraternity, an exclusive organization based at the University of the Philippines’ College of Law, from its auspicious beginnings in October 1939 to the present day.

Over the past 70 years, the fraternity has produced seven senators, six Supreme Court justices, almost 30 bar topnotchers (including two number one), 15 congressmen, over 100 judges, and countless public servants.

Distinguished Alphans led by Supreme Court Chief Justice Reynato Puno and Senator Francis Escudero will be the guest speakers at the gathering, which is expected to draw Alphans from three generations, along with colleagues and friends from Diliman and the wider community.

Special guests include Mrs. Letizia Roxas-Constantino, widow of charter member Renato Constantino, and three senior members, all in their 90s, Prof. Jorge Coquia, noted international law expert, Col. Rafael Estrada, national commander of the Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor, and former Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Abraham Sarmiento, Sr.

Within the university, the Alphans hold the distinction of  producing more editors-in-chief of the Philippine Collegian than any other fraternity or organization. Always known for its nationalist and democratic orientation, the fraternity is proud of four Alphans who are among those honoured in the Dambana ng Kagitingan (Heroes Shrine) in Quezon City: Renato Constantino, Enrique Voltaire Garcia II, Abraham Sarmiento Jr, and Hermon Lagman.
