I recall a pizza joint named Piece O' Pizza (slogan: "Had a piece
lately?") on Western between Santa Monica Blvd (to the south) and
Hollywood Blvd. (to the north)...a block north of the old Pussycat Theater
(not that I ever went there ;-))?? This was, however, in the late 70's.

No. The Hollywood pizza joint where we high schoolers hung out in the
mid-60's was McGoo's on Hollywood Blvd. Gay 90's theme with lots of
sing-alongs on the rinky-tink piano. I don't remember a thing about
the pizza.

ME: I remember McGoo's. Not very good pizza, as I recall.
My friends and I used to hang out at the Two Guys From Italy on
Hollywood Boulevard at Las Palmas, a block or two away, if I recall.
(And I think there was a McGoo's in Westwood Village, as well.)

ME: Piece O'Pizza was a chain that was all over L.A. in the 60's and
70's. There was one on La Cienega near Airdrome...there was one on
Pico just east of Sepulveda (I think the building's now a Numero
Uno)...there was one on La Brea just south of Hollywood...there was
one on Beverly Boulevard just east of Fairfax...there was the one you
mention and a few others.
The only one I know of that's still in existence is on Venice
Boulevard, a few blocks west (I think) of Centinela.
I never thought their pizza was any good but they had a terrific (and
cheap) spaghetti plate and meat ball sandwiches.
I don't recall there ever being a 2 Guys at Hollywood and Las
Palmas. There was (and still is) Micelli's (sp?) there. And on the
corner was the infamous Gold Cup. The Hollywood 2 Guys was on
Cahuenga just south of Hollywood Blvd next to the newsstand.

ME: There were a couple of outlets of Two Guys in Hollywood. There
was one on Yucca, one block north of Hollywood, near Cherokee. There
was the one you mention on Cahuenga. But there was definitely one on
Hollywood at Las Palmas. It was opposite the Gold Cup. (The
Northwest corner had an ice cream parlor and then the Two Guys was one
or two doors west of the ice cream parlor.)
I remember Micelli's on Hollywood, and especially my favorite one on
La Cienaga, but what was the "Gold Cup", and what made it infamous?

When I worked at the Daily News, we used to order in from the Two Guys on
Burbank near Van Nuys. They made an eggplant parmesan sandwich that was
just fantastic.

Actually, Micelli's was (is) on Las Palmas. And there was (is?)
another in the Cahuenga Pass. I'm sorry I brought up the Gold Cup.
Nobody in their right mind ever ate there. It was a coffee shop and
a famous hangout for the male hustlers when that area from Selma to
Hollywood Blvd. was the center of that lifestyle in the '50s and
'60s (it even made Life Magazine.)

I want to say that the name was "Vittorio's" but I'm not quite sure. The
place was a gem and it was a great spot to take a date to on a limited
budget. The guy that ran it was some sort of aspiring Italian singer,
possibly bit-part actor, and his entire restaurant (very tiny) was filled
with memorabilia of his career. The specialty was a pizza blanca but you
could get just about any of the traditional Italian-American dishes for
very little money. The best part was that the owner would sit and chat
with you for your entire meal and was really charming. Can't tell you how
the food was but I can guarantee you that the atmosphere and service and
the price was a Godsend to those who had to scrape together a few bucks to
take someone out to dinner for the first time. He greated you like a lost
friend, sang along with the everpresent opera music, and in truth, I've
never had a meal at Valentino's or anywhere else of late where the owner
took as much interest in the people who walked in the door.
Everytime I pass that corner and see the spot where he used to hold court,
I get a little sad. If Vittorio (if that was his name) could have held
out until the late 90s when cheesy little retro martini/goomba joints have
become all the rage, he would have been a millionaire. I hope the guy is
still OK, living in Palm Springs, and spends his day singing Italian love
songs to the love of his life.

Micelli's is still there? I thought Micelli's closed years ago!
This is good news indeed. They were excellent.

Yup. Passed it today and it seemed to be jumping. The neon sign in
front spelled it "The Original Miceli's".

I think there's still one somewhere nearby in Playa del Rey, maybe on
Lincoln or Sepulveda? I suppose I could open a phone book, ...
My "Italy's Little Kitchen" used to, mysteriously, use the Piece
O'Pizza checks. Gosh, five course dinner for five dollars, those were
the days.
