I just moved to Woodland Hills a few days ago from West L.A. I'm looking
for recommendations for the following :
1. Great Barbecue, West Valley
2. Thai food
3. Good Mexican food, and
4. Any places which deliver, regardless of cuisine.

Also, my new apartment management has a policy: no charcoal barbecues
allowed. Bummer. Have to use gas or electric units. Any recommendation
for a unit that is safe, easy to use and would allow me to cook with
hardwoods such as hickory, et cetera, for smoking?

All recommendations welcome.

If you are in Woodland Hills you might want to check out the new El Presidente
located at Canoga and Victory. It has good mexican food and a good happy
hour, plus a huge sports bar.

For BBQ check out Dr. Hogly Wogly's Tyler Texas BBQ, 8136 N. Sepulveda,
at Roscoe, in Van Nuys.

TOM:

If you care to drive 15 minutes to the corner of Reseda Blvd & Nordhoff
St.next to Blockbuster, you'll find CASA FRESH Mexican Grill, just 3
months old but customers say "the best burritos they've ever had".
Inexpensive, contemporary Mexican. Fresh salsas made twice a day...

I'm very "suspect" because I'm one of the owners - but because I don't
want to abuse the Web, if you don't think so, ask for me and it's on the
house.....Our customers really made those remarks. Many of them.

Also if you like Indian food, try India's Tandoori at 19006 Ventura.
Excellent for years and moderate prices. Piacere on Ventura Blvd, just
west of Topanga is a beautiful place, wonderful Italian food - a hair
above moderate but worth it forthe food & atmosphere...(Oh, I don't have
any interest in them - just enjoy them).

Good luck in the Valley. It's more civilized than most people on the
west side think it is - but it takes some searching......

Until fairly recently I worked in Woodland Hills and India's Tandoori
was the best of the Indian restaurants that we tried. I agree with
this recommendation.

I disagree with this recommendation. People in the West Valley wax
poetic about Piacere. If you've eaten at any of the many good Italian
restaurants on the Westside you will find Piacere disappointing. It is
a Westside wannabe. It's prices are equivalent to those you find on
the Westside but its food is not. The restaurant's menu is beyond
their ability. They make food substitutions without telling the
patrons. I guess they assume that you do not know enough about the
food to be able to tell the difference between one ingredient and
another. Definitely not worth the money in my book and I am willing to
pay a lot of money for a good meal.

You didn't ask for Italian recommendations but since one was offerred I
will make a better (in my opinion). I think the best Italian in the
neighborhood is Maria's Italian Kitchen in Calabasas. They also have a
restaurant in Encino. They are not connected to the Westside
restaurants (Brentwood, West L.A.) using the same name.

The quality of restaurants available in the West Valley is nowhere near
what one is able to find in West L.A. The East Valley is much better.
Simi Valley (where I now work) is impossible.

Italian cuisine wasn't on your original list, but Nicola's Kitchen at
20969 Ventura Blvd (in the French Quarter) is wonderful--at least it used
to be when I had regular business in that area.

Thank you.

That's what is so good about it. They are able to execute their menu.
They prepare very good food. It is not fancy. Food does not have to
be fancy to be wonderful.

I really like their pastas. I especially like the Pasta Maria with
shrimp and their ravioli with marinara sauce is pretty terrific. The
shrimp fra diavalo is not too bad either.

One other thing, I love their green beans limone. It's too big for an
appetizer in my book, but I love to share it with one other person.

I think the Hartman's recommendation of MARIA'S is an excellent one - as

long as we understand that it's great for a "neighborhood" place. It

doesn't pretend to be a "West Side Foodie Trendie Place". Their Roast

Maria's in West L.A. looked closed when I saw it last week.

Since I now work in Calabasas (I live in West LA) I would like to know
what the street address for Maria's. Event though our employer
provides lunch and dinner, it's nice to get out sometimes.

They shut all the blinds when its closed. I ate lunch at La Serenata
Gourmet (right across the street from Maria's) last week and saw a
people go in.

23331 Mulholland Dr. (at Valley Circle)

818-225-0586

There is a shopping mall there and Maria's is in the mall.

David:

A couple of ideas:

1: No great. Rosie's on Platt is not too bad. Hogly Wogly's in Van Nuys is
the closest that could be called very good.

2. Little Orchids on Ventura between Topanga and Canoga is *superb*.

3. La Parilla on Ventura near Reseda. For quick, good and healthy, La Salsa
or...

4. California Grill on Ventura and Fallbrook. Great burritos, cheap and they
deliver.

PS - Is Primenet still promising to improve their service real, real soon?

I can see the shopping center from my back yard. Never tried
Marias. Is it that good?

For the three years I worked in the West Valley (before my company
lamentably moved to Simi Valley) it was my favorite near work
restaurant. My Friday lunch group and I ate there about once a month.
One time only did we not enjoy the meal. We let the manager know and
he picked up the whole check. You can't ask for a better response than
that.

I think their pastas are very good. I especially like their freshly
made cheese ravioli with marinara sauce. I also really like the Pasta
Maria with shrimp. This is pasta with lemon, olive oil, shrimp, and of
course garlic The pasta is very lightly coated (except that one day we
were not happy with our meal). My very very favorite appetizer there
is green bean limone. This is green beans with lemon, olive oil, and
lots of garlic. In this case, the beans are swimming in the dressing.
It is delicious. I know the Pasta Maria and the geen beans limone
sound kind of the same but they are very different.

I prefer the restaurant for lunch over dinner.
