Hi:

Can anyone recommend a good Italian (northern) restaurant in the Sherman
Oaks area? I don't want to have to dress to impress, I'd prefer casual.
Price is not an issue, but food quality definitely is. I don't want family
style because this is a date I'm going on. Something, elegant or romantic.
Anybody?

To me there is no doubt, Posto is the place you want to go. It's my
favorite restaurant in the Valley and one of my favorites in LA. The food
is contemporary regional italian and the menus change with the seasons.

Posto is Peirro Selvaggio's valley outpost (he also owns Valentino and
Primi). I have been eating there for four or five years and the food
quality has never varied - it's always excellent. They have a terrific wine
list too. It's unpretentious but terrific. You and your date will love it.

Depending on how much you eat (and drink), it will set you back $100 to $150
for dinner.

I ate there two weeks ago and it was as good as ever.

I agree that Posto is great, but I don't think I'd feel comfortable
there in what I'd call casual dress (jeans and a T-shirt). Depending on
what you're definition of casual dress is, you might want to look
elsewhere.

The short answer is no, there is no good casual (but non-family) northern
Italian restaurant in Sherman Oaks. For some reason Sherman Oaks has turned
into the good casual French restaurant capital of Southern California, but
not Italian.

I haven't been there yet; but, if Posto is half as good as Valentino, it
should be an excellent fancy northern Italian restaurant.

Studio City, Sherman Oaks adjacent, Mezzomundo (sp) on Ventura Blvd. east
of Whitset. Classy little place frequented by the studio folk. Friendly
and the food is pretty good. Will not break your wallet. And if you
really want to impress your date, after dinner you can take her down the
street to the Queen Mary to watch the drag queens sing and dance!

The two that come to mind for me are:
La Pergola - 15005 Ventura Blvd. Sherman Oaks.
il Tiramisu - 13705 Ventura Blvd. Sherman Oaks.

Andy, try The Wave in Encino. Not Sherman Oaks, but real close. It is the
PERFECT place, so romantic, wood bruning stove, spacious, and a water
scuplture. The chef is from Florence. It's not tomatoe Italian, but Northern
Italian elegance, without shouting "ITALIAN!" The prices aren't even inflated!
PLus there is such a great variety of food besides perfect pasta and wood
stove prepared pizza...crab cakes, seafood pasta, grilled seafoods, awesome
desserts, great and fair price list. Al ot of wood in the atmosphere, so
casual but elegant, it is definitely a find. . It's called The Wave, it's on
Ventura Blvd. (at Balboa).
