Anybody know anything about Marisa's and Ara's, both on Melrose around
La Brea? I've never seen anything written about them so wonder if
anyone has tried them and how they are.

Ara's is a pretty much second-rate
Lebanese joint with a small Hollywood
following--if you don't want to drive
to Maroush, you could do worse. Marisa's
Burrito Adventure is recommended only
to aficionados of house music and
those who want to know what a burrito
might taste like in Wichita.

Marisa's has upgraded to more of a gourmet Mexican menu; in fact, I felt
uncomfortable stopping in there to pick up a burrito-to-go. (They still
have their "classic" burrito menu, but they don't seem to be eager to
advertise the fact.) I haven't tried the new menu. There is no house music
playing there anymore, and the decor has been made considerably more
upscale.

Instead of going to Maroush (which really sucks in my opinion) I would
recommend a restaurant called Carousel, on Hollywood Blvd. just west of
Normandy (south side of the street in the Hye Plaza). They have an extensive
menu of mezes, and the food is always good. They also have a new branch in
Glendale, on Brand Blvd (just North of California), but the prices are
higher and the service is so-so.

For an even better Lebanese restaurant, I would recommend the Middle-East
Restaurant, in Alhambra, on Main Street. Very authentic food.

Oh, I think they may also have a branch in Sherman Oaks - or if not there
is a similar restaurant by the same name. The food was really good. I
didn't pay and it was take out, so I can't comment on the prices and
service but the food was excellent. We normally try either the Cafe De
Liban on Ventura Blvd. in Tarzana in the mall with Ross and Coffee
Junction, etc. and it's also very good but Carousel was a really
pleasant alternate.
