Earlier this evening I was driving down San Pedro Street and lamenting the
loss of this historic Chinese restaurant in the old Produce District. I
got to wondering if anyone here knows if there's a restaurant that
"inherited" the menu and recipes, perhaps through family or employment.
There were some dim sum items that I've never seen anywhere else on the
planet, so it would be a delight to enjoy them again.

If anyone has any leads, thanks in advance.

How vividly I remember the char siu bao, the pork ones with the pink dot
and the others (I can't recall what the meat was) with the "tips". In my
pre-adolescent stages it would have been quite erotic if I had known the
meaning of that word!

I've particularly got a hankering for those deep-fried, bright yellow
things that had maybe chopped shrimp inside?

I've found wonderful sesame seed balls and that white stuff made from
seemingly fermented rice (do you know the name?) but those deep-fried
bright yellow things... ah!

Speaking of Paul's did you ever eat at Mary's which was further north on
San Pedro Street, but also long gone?

If you hanker for old-fashioned Cantonese
dim sum, the kitchen behind the old Hong
Kong Low, in the alley called Bamboo Lane
in Chinatown, still serves absolutely
traditional, fresh, delicious stuff for almost
nothing (I have fed 12 for about $30), though
it is only avalable to go. The bao and the
curry turnovers are just great.

Paul's always had better char siu. I'd buy it by the pound and take it home.
Great for soups or other dishes. Man Fook Low had great rude waiters. Low was
better before they remodeled in the early 70's.
