As I sit here watching Lost in Austen, deciding to name my next dog
Fitzwilliam, and wondering if it's too early to start drinking, I
wanted to say how glad I was that we were all able to get together
last Tuesday. It was great to get to know you all, and think it would
be fun to do some more together-getting! We talked about doing a group
viewing of The Duchess of Duke Street, and while I do have a friend's
Amazon Prime account that I could use, and an apartment to watch it
in, what I *don't* have is a properly-sized screen to watch it on. It
just slipped my mind that most people don't care to watch tv shows on
screens larger than 13 inches across... What I do have is a place to
fit people, a very charming dog, and Bananagrams, so this idea of a
nerdy evening watching mannered people furrow their brows can become a
nerdy evening arguing that "Et" is, too, a word, and you totally won
that round. If you have not played Bananagrams, trust me when I say
that it is a delight, and even better when accompanied by Qream-based
cupcakes (at least, I'd imagine it couldn't possibly be made worse by
such an accompaniment).
If someone else would rather host, and has a tv on which to watch
DoDS, that'd be great, too!
Thoughts? Any interest?

I am definitely interested in all of these things.  I don't have a real tv which means a) I can't offer such a thing, but also b) I am very accustomed to watching historical dramas unfold on a tiny screen.  I will happily contribute two-buck Chuck and non-Qream-based desserts (I would think that qooking with Qream might actually be a fun/ disturbing activity to do together!)  For those of you who couldn't make it to the last round, consider joining us this time!  It was very fun and not-awkward and it is nice to have kindred spirits in this big ol' city.

I'm interested too! It was great to meet you guys--mostly not really
awkward even a little bit. And I second Lauren's kindred spirits
comment (/Anne of Green Gables reference?) I don't really have a
solution to the tiny screen problem though; other than volunteering to
get the series from Netflix? This would be definitely do-able,
although the series is 10 discs total and I can only have one out at a
time. As an alternate solution, I think there may exist some kind of
cable for hooking up one's computer to one's television, but I'm
pretty unclear on the details. This does sound like the perfect
birthday gift to ask my parents for though....

I'm free almost anytime, although this weekend might be a bit tricky.
What times are good for you ladies? Let me know if I should order the
first disc of the series from Netflix and I'll get on it. Qream!
Qostume dramas! Can't wait.

Hi all -
I actually have a fairly spacious apartment, a decent-sized TV, and my
roommate usually leaves out her fancy computer-to-tv cable. Buuuutttt
I wasn't able to make it to the pin-up (too tired to drive from
downtown to santa monica after work, sadly), so it would be maybe a
little weird to just invite you all to my house? I'm pretty sure you
won't Lifetime-movie me, but I'd also be really happy if there was
another meet-up a little farther to the east sometime soon. Do any of
you guys live east of Fairfax?

Ok, let's ponder this. Amy, unfortunately none of us other 3 live east
of Fairfax; Brentwood (and carless), Culver City, and Marina Del Rey
are before you. I'm happy to travel east, as I've got a pretty
flexible schedule and don't drive much otherwise. Maybe I could
transport you, Lauren, and pat myself on the back for being green-ish?
What sort of east side are we talking about--La Brea or Monterey Park?
I also can imagine little possibility of anyone being Lifetime'd, and
have confirmed my suspicion via our last meetup that no one who reads
The Hairpin this much could be less than pleasant.
The moral of this story is: I'd be happy to move this shindig eastward
and stream Quostumery.
As for times: the next two Saturday nights (10/29 and 11/5) are full
for me. However, Fridays and Sundays are fine, after 10/23.

Brentwood (and Carless) is going to be my first single.
I am a fan of this plan.  Candice, I'm also willing to try to bus to your area to cut back on driving time, or to meet you on the way if that makes more sense.  Maybe Sunday would be good since that means less traffic?  I'm usually free then, and the next two weekends after this one would work for me.  Also, I just drank a lot of wine and hereby nominate "Lifetime'd" as an official addition to the 2012 OED.

I think there is also another Brentwood-er on this list (and maybe more than one!) so if we have enough interest we could generate a somewhat larger carpool and be even greener/ split gas more ways.

wine is great! know what else? Beer! and homemade mozzarella sticks,
but with feta, because that's all you have in the house! (see: "I'm so
sad i could eat a horse" comments, and also my kitchen right now.)
Meeting you half-way also makes sense, Lauren, and we could totally do
that with multiples.

Is there anyone with an eye on this conversation that hasn't yet
spoken up? Or is it just the four of us who love creepy creamy
liqueurs and restraint?

Ps, i'm totally going to bake the shit out of some stuff. and it's
going to be cramazing. (CO-nominated for the OED with full credit to

I can't even talk about that post.  It is taking all my willpower not to eat the rest of the cheese in my cheese drawer.  and it is a LOT of cheese.

do y'all have twitters and other various social networking presences?  I am http://twitter.com/lauren_sherm (I mostly talk about cheese, speaking of) and don't have a fancy personal Facebook url but will totally friend you all if you do, unless that is weird?

yeah, i just double-followed you. i'm @framboisauvage (and
@candybeans--i've had a lot of phases) on twitter, just fyi. and, the
more cheese talk, the better. I've learned that, if there's a
superdelicious cheese in the house, i'm gonna eat that cheese. (sadly,
there are two mini-marts within 50 yards of my house that sell ben &
jerry's, and i'm feeling a magnetic pull in that direction right now.)
And, that cheese song you tweeted? HOLY F.

Hey! I live east of Fairfax (Sunset and Martel) and am down for anything, mostly anytime (depending on my work schedule, which, as a coffee hurler, is flexible so I don't know [I am employed now!]), but especially, or maybe only, if it involves Qream and / or baked goods. AND i like cheese too!!!, reference https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/307845_10150430700513646_505113645_10062262_636787151_n.jpg taken at the Whole Foods in Austin. Laaaadies!

I am the WORST at responding sometimes, but here I am finally! I had a
really great time meeting you all and am majorly in favor of a round
two! Alas and alack, I am without much that would be of help in the
viewing department, but I am EXCELLENT at throwing together finger
food. I love finger food. ff 4 eva.

I literally live one street west of Fairfax, so I'm thinking I'm kind
of mostly central in that matter?

Unfortunately, the next couple weekends of mine are pretty booked with
spooky scary things. I would be totally down with a week night thing,
or something after the first of Nov. I know I'm late piping in to this
thread, so I understand if I missed the scheduling boat, but I'd love
to figure out a way to see you all again at some time or the other!

Hi hi hi! I didn't make it to the last pin-up on account of commuting
issues too (sup, Amy L.) but I would be down to join for your next non-
Lifetime-esqe shindig. I am east of Fairfax (Hollywood, represent) and
Sundays work well for me too. (Although, sadly, will be out of town
the first two weekends in November.)

Looking forward to meeting everyone! Also, I'm @anaottman on Twitter.
Happy Friday.

hi all,

i'm sorry i'm also terrible at responding (and REALLY good at lurking creepily online yet not saying anything), but, hello!  i'm also sorry i missed the last pin-up.

i'm down for anything involving lifetime or not involving lifetime (does anyone share my passion for either The Golden Girls or The Nanny?)
i'm in west hollywood (several blocks east of fairfax) but down for travel.  i'm a recent nyc transplant so driving is still something of a novelty for me.

my abode is sadly not really up to par for entertaining purposes, but i do have a super-sexy netflix account, and can order discs of whatever we want to view.

i also enjoy foods that can be eaten with fingers.

i think that's my facebook?  i also don't have it as a fancy url, but maybe i should look into it...

also, is there any interest in crafty stuff?  i'm not crafty whatsoever, but have been meaning to start dabbling.

i'm kind of thinking of the ice resin jewelry-making class... i love that they are all one-night-only (low committment level!).

Hey everyone!

I'm so glad we had that last meet-up so soon after I started working
and that stupid commute from eastern IE to Irvine, because it has been
kicking my ass. Thus, the non-responding. I would so like to hang
out with y'all some more and to meet the new folks! If we were to do
a Friday or (possibly) Sunday in the next couple of weeks, I would
likely be able to come. After that, I'll be living in Irvine without
a car. BUT if we're meeting up westside, I could totally take the
train into downtown if someone would be down with carpooling from
there.

ALSO I would bake you delicious things. Kahlua mocha cupcakes with
Bailey's frosting, for one thing. I could track down my whiskey bread
pudding recipe.

Double also, I love crafting and am extremely depressed that I haven't
had more time for knitting of late.

I should start a Twitter handle discussion thread just so we can have
them all in one place! Should I start a discussion thread for Twitters
and such?

I'm actually right on the border of WeHo and Hollywood - if you made
a big rectangle out of the area between La Brea and Fairfax and Sunset
and Santa Monica, I would live pretty close to the middle of it.
Centrally located, but not particularly freeway-friendly. I'm free
later weekdays (8ish and beyond) and my weekends are generally wide
open. If we did end up meeting up in my apartment at some point, I
should warn you all that I have a cat, though she likely would be too
freaked out by new people to work on getting her dander up in anyone's
business. She and I are a lot alike that way.

ok, ladies, i'm just going to throw out two dates that seem like they
might work: Sunday, October 30, and Tuesday, November 8, at centrally-
located Amy L's house. Thoughts? Votes?

Third on crafts: i hearts them. my main craft of choice is crochet
(i'd especially like to make this blanket here: http://bit.ly/oRz74F).
If anyone wants to learn, i would be quite happy to teach. For you
eastsiders, there's a store in Atwater called The Little Knittery that
sells all manner of cool yarns and crafty things, and offers free
intro to knitting and crochet classes if you buy your materials there,
as well as other classes. also, there's a tutorial on cross-stitch in
the latest Martha Stewart magazine that i'm now dying to test out.

also, I don't think i said yet, but i guess my fiancé made me a
special facebook link when i wasn't looking one time?

Ok! Real tawk: on Sunday the 30th, it being the morning after major
Halloweenie festivities, I will probably be a less-than-adorable,
recovering mess, running the risk of serious qonvulsions at the sight

HOWEVER, November 8th looks bright and breezy for me, and I'd be soooo

Yeahhh, that is an excellent point.  Nov 8th would work for me though.  I've been getting into cross-stitch these days, which is mad easy and immensely satisfying.  More real tawk: sometimes I stay in on a Saturday night and cross-stitch while drinking wine and watching costume dramas. SO this all sounds great to me.

Nov 8th works for me for realz.  i'm jazzed to dive into both cross-stitching and crocheting.  my grandma tried to teach me to crochet when i was 6, and got pretty peeved with my lack of fine motor skills (i was 6!!!).  so i'm a little scarred, but maybe it's time to get back on the horse.

Some more real tawk: sometimes i stay in on both friday AND saturday nights and drink wine while watching Law and Order on a loop.  i'd be thrilled to add an activity and/or people to that mix.

I'm in for Nov. 8th too! I can bake something to bring, since I'm a little scared of crafting. Then again, in the interest of confronting my fears, what exactly do I need if I want to get in on the crochet action? A hook? A needle? How do I make something soft and snuggly with such vicious-sounding objects?

Real tawk: I have never seen an episode of Law and Order, but at one time I think I had watched all the British costume dramas available on Netflix Instant. I probably better never get on the wrong side of the authorities, since I think I would have a hard time proving I was a real American.

Let's say 7, since I'm guessing many of us have work the next
morning. Or a bit earlier even if it strikes your fancy.

Here's where you'll want to be arriving:
1338 N. Gardner St.
Apt. 2
Los Angeles, CA
90046

Parking in my neighborhood is not exactly fun, but doable. Just be
careful if you park to the west, as there are weird areas where you
can't park at all after 8pm. Oh, WeHo, why are your parking rules so
ridiculous.
My gate has a buzzer, and I'll give you guys my cell number as well
when we get a bit closer to the 8th.
Also, i have plenty of chairs, but some of them are just uncomfy
kitchen chairs, so if you have cushions or the like, that might be
good? Is it weird to ask people to come to my house bearing cushions?
Maybe I will just get busy on the cushion-buying front.

Now I'm going to spend the next 2 weeks trying to figure out what kind
of punch to make.

Also, just so everyone is aware, you can buy little cross-stitch kits from michael's with everything you need for like 5 bucks.  And they take foreeever, so even though it's super addicting, it's a relatively cheap habit.

Hi everyone!

I am a creepy lurker on this thread, and I totally want to come. I'm in Culver City, new to LA from NYC and I would love to bring some booze or snacks, as I am a little light on the crafting ability, but heavy into costume dramas

ALSO- I know, you guys have all been talking, and I am new to the thread, but there is a totally un-Lifetimey Halloween Party at my house this weekend (Friday night), and I would love to invite all of y'all. 9:00 or party time, 5633 Spokane Street, 90016. Booze, debauchery, nerdy costumes, apple bobbing, the whole nine.

If I can finish my Dalek dress by then, I will have an excellent costume.

Anyways, hi!

Looking forward to meeting you guys!

DALEK DRESS!!!! i was so sad that I couldn't go to the halloween party
me and Mr. F were invited to on Saturday (i'm... catering a 75-year-
old lady's birthday party(??)), so i might take you up on your
gracious, lifetime'd-caution-to-the-wind invitation, too!

Christy: please to provide a list of costume dramas on Netflix Instant
that are worth watching (ie, all of them). you clearly know about some
I don't.

Crochet!! I can't wait to teach people! I learned from Martha Stewart
magazine, like, ten years ago, so it's not hard to learn.I'd recommend
starting with a medium-weight wool--not too thick or thin, but that
isn't so super expensive or fine that you'll feel bad about unraveling
it and re-crocheting it a few times--and, say, a medium hook like a
size H (but check the recommended hook size on the band around the
yarn--they're sized in letters). Maybe even a set of hooks like this,
if you can already tell you'll love it (spoiler: you WILL): http://bit.ly/rNFnpM
If you bring two colors of yarn, i can teach you how to make nifty
granny squares (http://www.purlbee.com/storage/gran3.jpg)! In contrast
to cross-stitch, it's pretty fast, and uses less yarn than knitting,
so you could totes have a couple scarves or beanies or an afghan in
time for christmas as a crafty gift!

and, i am TOtally getting one of those cross-stitch kits when I go to
Michaels for yarn. I love slow, meticulous crafts.

and, naturally, I will bring food of some kind--maybe cheese! or,
little tarts! or little. cheese. tarts. oh my.

Also, is anyone over here following the LA Pin-Up stuff happening on

the same people? I'm so confused, you guys.

And yes, I've been confused on all the different groups as well..... I

On the knitting/hobbies note, I'm glad we chose Nov 8 over Oct 30

Hannah, I'm sorry to hear about your family emergency, and I hope
everything goes well for you and your family. And I look forward to
meeting you at the 11th meetup. It's Meet-Up city over here.

I don't know if anyone mentioned this little gathering on the Facebook
page, but maybe it would be best not to, just because my apartment can
only hold so many crafting women comfortably. Hopefully that doesn't
cause any problems or make anyone feel left out?
Also, it'd be cool if you guys could let me know if you're definitely
coming by Friday, for set-up and also so my roommate isn't scared by
the influx of other humans into our apartment.

And if you need to get a hold of me directly at any point, you can
shoot me an email directly, or call/text me at 989-400-3527.

Ugh, I'm sorry guys, i used to get emails like everyone else when a
new message was posted. Suddenly, I started getting emails saying, "a
message needs your moderation," with google thinking each new message
is spam. I am just realizing tonight, on my iPod in my parents living
room, that I only get a moderation email once a week, so that's why
there's so much of a delay. I'm sorry! I didn't know I should be
checking it! Aah! Boo to me. i tried to lower the spam standard or
otherwise make it instant to post, but I couldn't find a way to do
that.
Are we still good for Tuesday the 8th? That is the day, right? Am I in
one of those dreams where I plan for days and show up for the pinup on
the wrong date, with no pants on?

Okay I've been going back and forth about whether to respond for sure, because I really want to come and even bought more cross-stitch supplies today in preparation-- BUT I also have a fellowship application due and 200 tests to grade and my master's presentation in a week, so I guess I'm like-- 75% sure I won't be having a breakdown on Tuesday?  Is that good odds?  I really want to be there and probably will.  Especially now that I am writing this email and realize I would SO much rather be watching costume dramas, crafting, and drinking wine than actually doing work on Tuesday night.

crafternoon! yes to that word!

I, also, had a lovely time at our little gathering, and would be down
for getting together the first weekend in December. It looks like the
other group is also planning on something crafty, and i'm not sure if
that means we should watch the facebook group, or the other google

I gladly volunteer my apartment (fireplace! cute dog!), though I don't
think it would be the most convenient option logistically (for

I had a lot of fun at the last get-together too. Thanks again for hosting, Amy. Your participation in this thread bears witness to the fact that we did not lifetime you.

I would also definitely do it again. The next installment of the Hairpin Costume Drama club is Wives and Daughters, which is totally on Netflix Instant and is way shorter than Duchess of Duke Street. We could probably watch all/most of it in one afternoon. Do we want to make plans for Saturday 12/3 or Sunday 12/4? I am down for meeting at Candice's or you guys could also come to my apartment. I'm in Culver, near the Robertson exit from the 10, but I'm not sure if that's more or less convenient for the majority. I'm already excited about having another reason to bake something.

What are your thoughts, ladies?

I'd be down for either the 3rd or 4th, and if Culver City is easier
for the group, then I'd be perfectly happy to meet up at Christy's
house. And, again, I just remembered that i totally don't have a TV,
so it would likely be more convenient to head to a home with one of
those things. mostly, i just like showing off my friendly dog.

Any other thoughts on 3rd or 4th? For the sake of getting closer to a
decision, I guess I'd be more inclined to do Sunday, but not for any
good reason. Ladies?

Either one is fine with me, but, all other things being equal (Lauren
can get there without trouble, etc), I'd probably choose Culver City
because i am lazy and it's closer. I made a fair amount of progress on

Okay yeah, looks like I can take the 12 blue bus to Culver City, so I am good either way!  And Amy, I have been coveting those hex nuts bracelets for a while.  I finished my night cheese sampler, so I'll have to get a new project underway. Or maybe I can just bring my masters thesis to work on?? Agh no, what a horrifying thought.

Lauren, definitely don't bring your thesis -- it's good to have time away from your work.  Think of it as time you're letting your subconscious work on what you're writing, while you distract your conscious mind with wine and crafts.
We haven't come down on a place yet, but I have to work early Saturday and also Monday, so maybe it would be better for my sanity if we went to Christy's?  I am not sure I will have the house-cleaning energy needed for guests on Sunday morning.
Although it's rude of me to say "hey, let's go to someone else's house!"....

Haha I was DEFINITELY joking on that one, the thesis will be staying far away. I do like the friendship bracelet idea, so maybe I will bring my embroidery floss stash. And I'm going to try to make muddy buddies (also known as puppy chow), so if all goes according to plan I will have the most delicious winter treat to share as well.

Haha, that's totally ok, Amy. I was about to call it for my place earlier since no one has expressed a strong preference so far. Shall we say Sunday at 1:00pm?

My address again is 3715 S. Canfield Ave. #102, Los Angeles, CA 90034. You should be able to find plenty of street parking during the day, but give me a call so that I can let you into the building. My number is 415.250.8155.

I'm looking forward to crafting and baked goods! I'm planning on buying a hook-up for my laptop tomorrow (early Christmas present) so hopefully the costume dramas will go off without a hitch too. Just as a heads up, I'm also having a Christmas decoration contest with a couple friends, so my apartment may be obnoxiously Christmas-y.

See you all on Sunday!

a christmas decoration contest! i cannot wait to see. So glad we were
able to make this work! I shall also be bringing some snacks, as well
as my cold weather libation of choice--hot chocolate with amaretto.
Thanks for hosting, Christy, and see you all tomorrow at 1!

Hey everyone! Excited to see you all. Having major bus issues so I'll probably be at least an hour late at this point, but looking forward to getting there eventually!
