I live on the west side, but am willing to travel. Are there non-
juicebox-y places in culver city? i don't have a ton of first-hand
experience, but i am willing to read a lot of things on yelp about
places!

I'm on the west side too! And don't have a car so would be especially
down for that area. There are some... okay.. places in West LA/ Santa
Monica. I might be going out in culver city tomorrow evening so I
will do some SCOUTING.

I'm aleanbluezither by the way. Apparently I missed the nickname
memo.

Also on the West Side! How awesome is that? I just moved here though,
so my nightlife knowledge is not exactly up to par? BUT I actually
live in Culver City, so I've been out in that area. I have a car too
though, so I can go other places if you guys don't want to come here!
Some CC suggestions: Rush Street? Is Rush Street too juiceboxy? I like
Rush Street, although mainly for their bottomless brunch; it may be a
little scene-y after dark. There's also Rocco's, which is sports bar-y
with good food, or if we want to get ridiculous and sing karaoke there
is Backstage? These are all within walking distance of each other,
since this is the part of town I am familiar with.

What do you all think?

P.S. I am pterodactgirl on the Hairpin.

Hi ladies! I'm in H-wood but willing to travel. Culver City -
Father's Office? Everyone loves that place. Or, Mandrake possibly,
and the drinks there are amazing.

Also, I'm now imagining that all of you on the westside/culver city
are there because you're ALSO UCLA grad students. You are, aren't
you? This is a safe space, you can admit it.

Ha, i never mentioned that i was @candybeans on the hairpin. Too many
nicknames.

Father's Office has been on my to-do list for a while (i tried
someone's french fries from there, and they were pretty delightful),
but amazing drinks also sounds nice! I've been to Rush St. at night,
and on a scale of one to Gjelina, or whatever the much cooler place is
that I don't know about, it was probably a 5, though I was there a
little bit early in the evening. It didn't blow my mind. Good food at
Rocco's also sounds appealing! Aah! I don't know anything! It all
sounds good!

and, I'm not a UCLA grad student, though that logic is sound--I just
finished at Loyola for law school, which is in Pico-Union, but I
happen to have a friend who lives here with an apartment above her
garage.

Law school! My mind made the UCLA connection since we have so much
grad student housing in Palms/surrounding area. The apartments are
cheap, but a year of living in Weyburn Terrace and literally having
the living room window of a classmate's apartment look DIRECTLY into
my bedroom window scared me away from living anywhere even remotely
near campus forever after. And now I work at a library at USC, which
is nearly as impractical commute-wise.
Also, Hairpin people = smart people, it has already been established.

My username is "amy wins again," although I don't comment often. Feel
free to ask me how often I win things (the answer is not very often).

Haha, I am at UCLA-- second year PhD student in psych, so feel free to let any UCLA or psychology-related jokes fly, I can take 'em.  I'm in Brentwood now though, and managed to avoid Weyburn and any grad housing.  Three years of dorm style life was enough for me.

I like Father's Office a lot, but haven't been to any of the other places for comparison.  The one in Santa Monica is rather small (not sure about the other one), so we would probably want to meet up on a weekday and on the earlier side if we want to be able to sit.  I also sort of like the idea of a dinner or a brunch sort of thing, which could involve both drinking and being able to actually hear one another. But I guess a happy hour is more low key? I don't know!

Westwood (blech, I know) has several restaurants with a separate and less formal happy-hour menu/ area, which might be a good compromise.  Do other, non-Westwood places have that sort of thing?

Here's another possibility: Zengo in Santa Monica Place (is that sort
of middle ground? probably not.) has a decent happy hour, plus free
parking for 2 hours if you get there before 6: http://www.richardsandoval.com/zengosm/index.php
There's also Beechwood on Washington near Abbot Kinney, which doesn't
get terribly busy (good and bad, since it has had mixed reviews):
http://beechwoodrestaurant.com/
Hearing each other would be nice, I agree--i am both not good at
hearing or speaking over that sort of din. Again, I think since
Beechwood isn't super busy, according to Yelp, that might be easier,
but I can't speak to the other places. Zengo does have an outside
part, so maybe that would help? But I'd be happy to go to Westwood,
too, if you have a place with a good happy hour that you like. I'm
fine with brunch, too, but I don't know of a great place for that
(Rush St?)

If we do it in October, I'm down for wherever! After that, I'll be
living in Irvine without a car so West Side stuff might be a little
trickier. Also, I love brunch & love karaoke!

I think I might cast my vote for Father's Office, since I've heard
such good things about it. Although the all-night happy hour at Zengo
seems cool too? I'm terribly indecisive, so too many options start
seeming overwhelming very quickly....

I am not a UCLA grad student--or a grad student at all. Does that make
me the underachiever of the group? I went to USC for undergrad too, so
please don't hate me. I just moved back to the area and am looking for
work, and cool people to hang out with/go to Father's Office with.
Unfortunately I can't do either of the upcoming weekends, but I can do
during the week anytime. Let's try to make it October so Serenityfound
can come! Maybe sometime next week or the week after?

I'll second Father's Office, since I've also been hearing about it for
a coon's age. I'd also be happy to do something during the week. Looks
like Father's office opens at five, and I'd bet that getting there
early-ish (happy hour time, though they don't seem to do a happy hour)
would make getting a table/order placed a bit easier. My schedule is
flexible, since I work from home, so early evening is easy for me.

Thursday of this week would work, but next week, maybe early, could be
better. Maybe next Tuesday?

I think this Thursday or next Tuesday would work for me.  I can't usually do Mondays or Wednesdays because I collect data on those evenings, but those would be good.  And Father's Office sounds like a good choice to me.  The one on Montana?

I'm down for anything except this Thursday, as I have to meet a dude
for a not-date that night. Next week any time would be nice. I work
downtown (at USC, so you know, that rivalry nonsense is not my "bag"),
so I wouldn't be able to do a really early time, but I could make it
by about 6:30.

ok, well, why don't we do next Tuesday at around 6:30? I was thinking
of the one in Culver City, since we had originally been looking for
Culver City meeting spots. Would the Santa Monica location be better
for all/most? If not, let's do Culver, since I know there's a fair bit
of parking around the Helms Bakery area, and mama likes easy parking.
And, a lot of buses go down Venice for the no-car folks.

Hey, hi! Using my comment-lurking skillz to pop into this group.
Wasn't able to make it to the last Pin-Up, excited for another shot at
it!

Father's Office is totally dee-lish, but based on my experience with
the Santa Monica location, seating can be iffy. Also not sure if they
take reservations as it's an order-at-the-counter-put-a-number-on-your-
table kinda joint. If we're a compact enough group tho, and we get
there early enough, it just might work! Their burgers are totally
ridiculously good, so I'd say it's worth a shot!

ok, Santa Monica Father's Office is fine with me--they'll both be
tricky seating-wise, so if there's one that's vastly more convenient
for one person and not vastly inconvenient for anyone else (speak
now...) then SM it is! So far, the size of the group is relatively
small, and if we can't sit and just have to stand holding beers until
we can stare down some folks with a table until they leave, that'll be
ok, too. It'll be a Tuesday night, too, so hopefully not as bad as a
Friday.

As for the poster, i couldn't see it! Sad! I bet it's lovely! As for
who to contact, I actually have no clue, but sending it to Edith or
Jane Marie is probably worth a shot, right?

Right now, it looks like we're doing Father's Office at 6:30 on
Tuesday, October 11. Objections?

Aaah hope my issues won't cause us to be horribly squished!  Maybe we can get a head count and if it is more than five or six, I understand that the Culver City location would be better.  And if anyone is into the carpool sitch, let me know!

I don't think all six people who have contributed to the overall
conversation have spoken up so far, but if we want to get something up
on Hairpin, today would be a good day to send it in, right? We could
also just do a smaller group and go with what we have.

If you haven't spoken up yet, how about letting us know whether this

So... bullhorns then?  Should we all wear little hairpin nametags/stickers/ pins (pin pins)?

I'm not opposed to arriving a few minutes early to snag a table if anyone wants to meet up to do that.  Then maybe we could incorporate cell phone coordination and have a sitting area established when everyone else arrives. Organization!

But also maybe hats made of empty Qream bottles.

I'm happy to get there early, since I don't have much of a commute
(and a somewhat-pretend job in my house). As for finding one another:
how about you all become the proud owners of my cell number?
323-821-7093. It's relatively janky, so I don't have access to
Internet or anything from it, but i can sure text! Also, i look a lot
like christina ricci, but with square framed glasses and bangs-- does
that help? I'll surely be the only one sitting alone with a beer
reading Middlemarch on my ipod, so that's going to catch the eye.

If we don't order something with Qream, I don't think we'll be able to
call it a Hairpin meetup. God, do bars even carry that craziness?
