There is an opportunity to do a year-long internship at NASA JPL in Pasadena, CA, that has a high school outreach component. The goal would be to help communicate aspects of the Rosetta mission to high school students while also conducting research on the mission. The project is ideal for students on the education path. See below for more info.

The mentor is flexible in regards to the hours and duration (e.g. 10 or more hours per week, 10 weeks to one year duration of the internship.) If they find a suitable candidate, he or she would come in through one of JPL's unique year-round internship program and would be sponsored by the mentor.

If you're interested, please send your resume and unofficial transcript to Petra Kneissl-Milanian at petra.a.knei...@jpl.nasa.gov

Project Title: Rosetta Shadow
Desired Number of Participants: 1

Background Information:
Rosetta mission will land a spacecraft on a comet in November of this year and continue observing it as the comet gets closer to the Sun. There are research and educational opportunities available for undergraduate engineering and science college students.

Project Description:
There will be two aspects to this project. The students will work directly with the Project Manager monitoring the newest science results from the mission using direct information from the investigators as well as from various on-line science sites. The students will also monitor engineering performance of the spacecraft and report on problems and issues. The second prong of the project will be mentoring members of the internship program at the local high school. Selected high school students will participate in competition to build a simplified mechanical model of the Rosetta lander and land it in a simulated comet environment. The college students will work with the Project Manager to advise the high school students on viability of their designs.

Suggested/required Background/skills, Courses:
Required some very basic engineering courses, some interest in simple, clever design, some chemistry and physics helpful. Must be willing to work with high school students and help them with their designs of simple landers. Hands on type of approach will be very helpful.
