Hello, all!

I am a college student and an aspiring maker, wanting to start with building a simple radio that can broadcast and receive signals. I know some simple circuit analysis and basic analog and digital stuff. What would be a good way to get started? Thanks for any advice!

Receiving is easy, broadcasting a bit harder, and potentially illegal.

Do you want to broadcast something complex, like voice or music, or just some relatively low bandwidth data? If the latter, and you only need to broadcast a short distance, then these low cost transmitter and receiver modules from sparkfun.com may be exactly what you need...

I've used them and they're absolutely wonderful.

I should have made it clear. I want to build the radio from SCRATCH, not simply buying a kit and assemble it. Also, I am not broadcasting anything sophisticated, but simple things like, when I wake I can say “Hello, World”, or I can talk to my friends living across the street. Is this legally allowed?

Thanks!
