C'è aria di insofferenza in famiglia. Mercoledì non sopporta più i suoi parenti stretti e si dà da fare con gli esperimenti di laboratorio per cercare di porre rimedio alle loro lacune. Con successo, durante una fiera della scienza, innesta il cervello di un polpo (e non solo quello) nel corpo dello zio Fester, ma poi Pugsley manda a fuoco tutto e Mercoledì si ritrova più insofferente di prima. E se non fosse una vera Addams? E se avesse ragione quel fastidioso avvocato che li segue ovunque? Di certo papà Gomez non ha intenzione di dar retta alle sue farneticazioni e organizza una vacanza di famiglia per rinsaldare i legami.
Mercoledì è ancora una volta la figurina al centro della vicenda: se la piccola di casa Addams già rubava la scena nella serie televisiva originale, limitandosi a comparire sullo sfondo con la sua bambola decapitata, per i film di animazione di Vernon e Tiernan è senza dubbio il personaggio di primo piano e il veicolo più adatto per parlare oltre lo schermo al pubblico giovane.
Ciò non dovrebbe togliere, però, nulla al resto della famiglia, e invece mai come in questo capitolo Morticia è senza personalità e nonna Addams è mero strumento di una sotto-storia che non decolla. Anche l'umorismo verbale, punto di forza del primo film, qui non mette a segno più di un paio di punti (la battuta migliore è quella sulla dieta vegana della pianta carnivora) e serve a poco che Lurch si sieda al pianoforte, perché la sequenza è una replica del capitolo uno e non sorprende più.
La trama principale da un lato è sensibile all'aria dei tempi, poiché evoca uno scambio in culla, tema curiosamente vicino alla cronaca e al cinema d'autore coevo, dall'altro non è affatto originale e riecheggia l'episodio della presunta falsa identità di Fester che era stato al centro del lungometraggio del 1991.
Ancora una volta si tratta di dimostrare che Addams si è, non si diventa, ma cosa significhi essere un Addams non è così scontato come può sembrare. Pochi colpi di scena e una dose massiccia di prevedibilità non permettono al soggetto di fare un balzo e di operare una netta distinzione tra il materiale per un film e quello di un episodio come un altro, ma fortunatamente funziona l'idea del viaggio itinerante, su un camper degli orrori che è la miniatura di casa, con il disgraziato leone per animale domestico.
Dalle cascate del Niagara a Sleepy Hollow, da Miami al Grand Canyon, gli Addams, più tentano di mimetizzarsi e più sanno farsi riconoscere, per la gioia del loro pubblico di vecchi e nuovi affezionati, che hanno giustamente più paura dell'omologazione che di qualche incendiaria stranezza.
