Assistant Canvass Director - Peace Action West – Los Angeles

Description:

 

This is a great opportunity to experience a leadership role working with grassroots advocacy as a professional in the exciting political landscape of U.S. foreign policy. The Peace Action West canvass program combines an issue-based campaign oriented learning environment with fundraising and grassroots membership recruitment and mobilization strategies.

 

The Assistant Canvass Director reports to the Canvass Program Director and has a shared responsibility for all aspects of running the canvass program. This includes the recruitment, training, and development of a diverse and gender balanced staff skilled in recruiting members in targeted Congressional districts, coordinating grassroots lobbying efforts, undertaking electoral campaigns and meeting the monthly/yearly fund-raising budget.

 

Assistant Canvass Directors (ACD) represents Peace Action West in the community and must also coordinate with staff in other parts of the organization. As such, they will be responsible for upholding all Peace Action West personnel, safety and political policies, as well as representing Peace Action West accurately to both the community and other organizations.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

• Recruitment: The primary responsibility of the ACD is the recruitment and training of staff. They will manage all phases of recruitment, including exploring new avenues for the recruitment of a diverse staff.

 

• Staff supervision and development: The ACD will ensure that written materials are provided to staff to give them background on Peace Action West’s issues; ensure that daily briefings are conducted with canvass staff; maintain staff morale; articulate long and short term Peace Action West goals; implement diversity and program goals and campaigns; and develop, train and supervise all canvass staff.

 

• Fundraising and Finance: In consultation with the Outreach Director and Canvass Program Director, the ACD is responsible for meeting personal fundraising and program goals monthly and annually. Responsibilities include: field canvassing 2-3 shifts each week, staff payroll, ensuring accurately maintained financial records and regular financial reports to the Outreach Director and Canvass Program Director.

 

• Grassroots political actions: The ACD will communicate, implement and track grassroots political production generated by the canvass in targeted communities in coordination with our campaigns and the Outreach Director, Political Director and Canvass Program Director.

 

• Personnel: The ACD is responsible for maintaining and implementing all aspects of Peace Action West’s personnel policies.

 

Qualifications

• A proven track record of successful recruitment, training and retention of new staff

• A minimum of 6 months experience within a field canvass or phone organizing program

• A minimum of three months experience as an Assistant Director (or equivalent experience) with a demonstrated ability to train staff

• Commitment to Peace Action West’s political goals and organizational means to achieve them

• Proven leadership ability

• Proven administrative and record keeping skills

• Commitment to Peace Action West Personnel Policies

• Commitment to a minimum schedule of 40 hours per week

• A valid state issued drivers license

• Must be ready and willing to learn in all area’s of staff management, financial planning and grassroots political strategy
