Accountability is an issue for school leaders that can really raise
the temperature when only two questions are asked: Who are you
accountable to? What are you accountable for? it seems to me that
these questions can't be answered until there is agreement about what
school are for ie what is their purpose.
The recently released Melbourne Declaration is a welcome attempt to
deal with this. But it does raise issues about reporting requirements
and accountability measures that focus on academic learning. The
Declaration identifies two goals:
Goal 1: Australian schooling promotes equity and excellence
Goal 2: All young Australians become: successful learners; confident
and creative individuals; active and informed citizens.
I am very interested to find out what principals and other school
leaders are thinking.
