And to you and all. Have installed MediaWiki on my laptop to test out more stuff. Currently hacking to get the Latex stuff working for heavy maths.
Will post results on group.

Sure. Here's the progress so far.
1. Downloaded MediaWiki.
2. Already had XAMPP on Windows so created and unpacked MediaWiki into the htdocs folder.
(XAMPP takes care of Apache, PHP and MySql so we don't worry abt. separate installs.)
3. Created a folder called wiki in htdocs and moved everything in MediaWiki to wiki. Then deleted the MediaWiki folder. Moved Localsettins.php file to the wiki folder.
4. Then from the Firefox browser I typed in the location bar the URL
http://localhost/wiki/index.php which fired up the installation menu.
5. Enter all the parameters relating to the database.
6. Under superuser I left the root password blanked as the config file initially accepts no password for root for testing purposes.
7. And in about 3 minutes the familiar template appeared.
8. Then I carved out an icon for my test site from Photoshop to replace the MediaWiki icon.
Size was 135 pixels x 135 pixels. Put it in the images folder and surely Firefox picked it up after refreshing the cache (Ctrl + Shift + Click on Reload button).
9. Everything worked as we learnt in WikiEducator.
10. Had an issue with Uploading images but that was quickly fixed and images were uploaded.

---------------------

11. Then I tried to explore the Maths facility from the GUI Editor and that's where I am at the moment. The Maths wouldn't display.
12. Composed Maths in OpenOffice and converted to Latex format and uploaded to WikiEditor and still no good.
13. Then typed in literally a Latex equation and still no good. It was displaying the equation verbatim. e.g \begin{equation}x + y =x\end{equation} appeared literally whereas I wanted x + y = z
15. So I read thru the Math README file and clearly the laptop did not have the requirements to display the equation.
16. It told me what I needed to install to get the equations to work.
17. So I downloaded the Caml 3.06 package (a requirement) for Latex to work.
18. And that's where I am currently. I'm in Windows environment but the language described is Linux. So I will change to Ubuntu on my laptop and see how it goes.
19. But I'll try to fix the Windows problem first as there is an Executable Caml file which I hope will install the required packages just to get the correct Maths output.

OpenOffice exports in Latex format which is good news for heavy maths users. For non-maths users, Steps 1 - 10 is sufficient to test the MediaWiki on your local PC.

Will keep list posted.

Cheers
Alf
