Please see (below) the excellent email Scott Owens has sent out to his email list. He is starting to get some interesting responses but not the one we need…as yet.

He asked that his email be shared with our Racquetball List and that any input, opinions, or responses that you may have be forwarded to him at oldsco...@hotmail.com.

See you on the courts…

Hey Jan,

It has been several months since I've harassed you... so I thought it was time again! (jk... well sort of)

Recently I've been dealing with some physical issues and have not been "playing" for about four or five weeks.  Now I'm ready to start back with some volleyball and racquetball.  After just paying for my football season tickets Tuesday, I found out I can not get in to the IM Building.  You and I had some conversations about this issue about a year ago.  As a PSU graduate, father of two PSU graduates, supporter of PSU athletics both financially (thousands annually!!) and physically for over 40 years, and a dedicated alumni who has always supported and promoted PSU as one of the best universities not only in the USA, but the world, to be told I'm not allowed to use the same facilities that I have used as a child, student, father, and alum for 55 years is simply maddening!  As I stated, we had this very same conversation over a year ago.  Why hasn't there been something put in place to accommodate people in my situation... area residents... local groups... visitors to PSU... etc.?  Penn State continues to ask for my/our support... then simply slams the door in my/our face for use of facilities.  When I wrote last, I mentioned facility fees for "public" use.  PSU already have them for several entities... golf, tennis, swimming... etc., to name a few. How hard is it to come up with a fee structure for the IM Building and Rec Hall?  There has never been a time when I have used PSU facilities that I kept students or staff from using them.  I recognize that the purpose of these buildings are for classes and recreation of students and staff first.  But they should not be closed off to the general public... tax payers... and supporters of PSU.

What about the "Sports Pass" that PSU sends out to donors?  Why can't something like that be used for recreational facilities?

Please pass this email on to whomever needs to hear/read it.  I would make myself available to meet with someone from the athletic department any afternoon to discuss my feelings on these issues and try to resolve them.  At the very least, it would be nice to hear back from someone in the athletic department as soon as possible.

Again, I'm sorry that you are the recipient of my rantings... but I don't really know who else to speak with... who understands what and why I'm feeling the way I am.  Thanks for you time and your help.

As always... We Are!

Scott Owens
