Katana Man soon awakens, finding himself tied up with a chainsaw chain to the train. Denji adds that Katana Man is the same as him and when he pulled off his katana, he turned back to one piece. Denji says he needs to wait until the police come, but there is something he is upset about. He killed Himeno and because of that there is one less pretty girl in the world. However, he will live his life in prison without regret. Denji doesn't find that fair and Katana Man tells him he can't do anything about it as he is Public Safety's dog. Thinking a bit, Denji states he will be holding a tournament. Aki shows up, wondering what he means by tournament. Aki reports to the rest that Katana Man is under control and explains their location. Denji asks Aki if he wants to participate in his ultimate tournament. Denji explains that Katana Man shot Himeno, so they should give him nut shots. They will be taking turns hitting his balls and whoever gets the loudest scream out of him before the cops show up is the winner. Aki sighs, stating that their job is to capture him and not torture him to feel good, as that won't make Himeno happy. Aki takes out the cigarette he got from Ghost Devil and looks at it for a moment. He puts it back in his pocket and asks Denji what he gets if he wins. Denji states he will naturally get his balls. Katana Man can't believe it and asks them to stop as they approach him. The two then start kicking Katana Man, wondering if Himeno can hear their requiem for her.

Hayakawa tried to beat up Denji, threw him into a pile of trash, and almost burned him with a lit cigarette all within an hour of knowing him. These are the same things the Yakuza did to Denji in episode one, and clearly Denji is used to being treated like trash.

Every week when a new Chainsaw Man review goes up, there are typically a lot of shots to choose from to include within the content, but this week might have actually been the hardest yet. It is by far the prettiest episode yet, despite also being one of the most shocking, a trend that looks just beginning.

The whole vomit fiasco in the last episode ended up feeling second place to what was one of the most intimate and warm expressions of sexual attraction put to animation in a long while. And considering how this episode goes, it suddenly makes a lot of sense why so much thought and care went into expressing Himeno at her most human and carefree.

When she made a proposition with Denji to help each other get with their desired partners, it felt so obvious of a plot hook, ensuring more time together on the horizon. With all the time spent on the characters in the past seven episodes, that alone was exciting to look forward to. But before even the halfway point, the story took a shocking turn, and it was absolutely incredible.

The Katana Devil's introduction alone would be exhilarating, shocking, and the highlight of the episode, but the events prior make the entire sequence immediately tense. It starts with Makima being gunned down, then shots of the other members of the team being targeted by seemingly normal pedestrians who have their hands on guns.

It's amusing how much the thought process on the episode gets wiped clean as soon as the bullets fly because right before the crap hit the fan, the way Makima was written was intriguing. This whole time she's been incredibly kind and caring, but suspiciously so. Here, she openly expresses frustration with attending a meeting in Kyoto because the higher-ups are intimidating.

It's a small detail compared to the rest of the episode afterward, but it started to make me question the kind of person Makima is even more while watching. While only speculative, it seems clear that Makima won't stay dead. Everything about her is simply too alien for this to be her full end, a certainty not shared by Himeno, this episode's other apparent casualty.

The ending has the energy and quality of an opening, but it couldn't have properly fit anywhere else but this episode. The happier, quirkier themes of episodes past have given way, just like the story itself, to reveal something that is simply "Chainsaw Man."

When this show began, it was already good. It was patient and contemplative, in love with its characters and all of their flaws and dreams, but it was bound to happen that a moment would come when the show became... itself. There had to be an episode that would signal the start of what every meme and out-of-context manga panel that sold people of the series was about.

Warning: Spoilers for Chainsaw Man episode 12An unexplained moment in the Chainsaw Man anime's seaso one finale is actually quite tragic when considering the death of a hero in an earlier episode.

In episode 12 of Chainsaw Man, the Ghost Devil, who's now under control of the Snake Devil-wielding villain Akane following the death of its former contracted human Himeno in an earlier Chainsaw Man episode, suddenly stops choking its opponent Aki and opens one of its many hands. In its outstretched palm is a cigarette with the words "Easy revenge!" written on it. This triggers a memory in Aki when Himeno informed him that the Ghost Devil can only sense through fear, allowing him to kill it in the present day.

The episode also encourages Chainsaw Man fans to recall Himeno's experiences. Before Aki, Himeno had been unfortunate enough to witness death after death of her now-deceased partners. Wanting Aki to avoid the same fate, she constantly tried to convince him to leave with her so that they could have a normal life together. The irony is that Himeno hoped that Aki would never experience the same pain she had with her former partners and yet her re-purposing Aki's first legal cigarette into one for avenging her death not only means that she believed he would meet the same fate by surviving her, but that he had enough screw loose, a requirement that many have associated with the survival of devil hunters. Before this moment, it was assumed that Himeno didn't think he would survive because he wasn't broken, but after countless attempts to save him, this cigarette means she likely came to the conclusion that he was unstable enough to survive in the business as one of Chainsaw Man's devil hunters.

What do you think of Chainsaw Man Episode 1? Have you read the manga? Or is this your first exposure to the series? Did you think it was a good first episode? And how do you feel about Makima so far? Is she going to be your best girl? Let me know in the comments.

Written by Tatsuki Fuijimoto, Chainsaw Man tells the story of Denji, an orphaned teenager who tries to make ends meet by becoming a devil hunter. He is accompanied by Pochita, a devil dog that can be used as a chainsaw.

In this episode of Creative Culture, I talked with Jenna Whiting of @chainsawjenna , a prolific sculptor whose tool of choice is the chainsaw. We talked about her carving career and how she approaches the beautiful and amazing works of art she creates. She also talks about the performative nature of chainsaw carving and the various saws she uses. This is an inspirational episode for any creative person who is trying to find meaning in their art as well as people needing a nudge to start their own business.

This battle against the Bat turned out to be the appetizer for the main course against the Leech Devil. You can tell in this episode how the animation sequences brought forward incredible visuals that the manga would never be able to deliver. For now, this is THE highlighted animated fight scene for me; even more so than the previous episode.

This episode had quite a bit more extra scenes added in compared to the manga. Unlike in episode 2, where they omitted the Muscle Devil fight scene, this episode had some amazing fight sequences and a lot more Aki screen time.

As this is the final episode of Chainsaw Man Season 1, viewers will wonder if there is a Season 2 on the horizon. While no official announcement has yet been made, the popularity of the show coupled with the fact the books are still ongoing makes it extremely likely we will be hearing some news sooner rather than later.

New episodes of Chainsaw Man are available to stream on Crunchyroll. Available for $7.99/month (or $9.99/$14.99 a month for higher tier options), Crunchyroll offers a 14-day free trial for eligible subscribers.

The Nerd: Now, I gotta admit, there's really not much to say. You control Leatherface, the chainsaw-murdering psychopath, and you just go around killing people. That's right, you're the bad guy. Now, I think I understand why this game was so offensive. Sure, the graphics don't look too violent, but just the idea. The goal of the game is to murder innocent girls! Damn!

The Nerd: Now, as far as Atari goes, there's not much point of complaining about the graphics, but, could they have at least made his chainsaw a different color than his body? It just blends in. It's just like his arms just tangled together or he has like, a big jagged dick coming out of his chest. Like, what the Hell, man?!?!

The Nerd: The worst thing about this is that the more you use your chainsaw, the more you use up your fuel. That's right. The fucking thing runs on gas. When you run out of fuel, you're dead. So, when the game's over, the screen goes black like a Mortal Kombat fatality and the girl kicks you in the butt. How "violent." She kicks you in the rear.
