Hello LVL1!
What would you all recommend in terms of software for designing and printing models with a MakerBot Replicator 2/2X? Ideally, free software would be nice, but I do have some funds available. Thanks!

Depends entirely on what your skill set is and what you intend to do!

OpenSCAD is a pretty common choice.  You write "code" that defines your objects.

Sketchup is also fairly common.  Easy to use, but not particularly precise for engineering work.

There's always FreeCAD for a program more similar to Autocad.

DesignSpark Mechanical is a good choice, and probably better than FreeCAD.

123D is good, as is TinkerCad, for online, more artistic CAD.

Start with tinkercad.com if you have never designed in 3d. Very easy
