Here is a message that Chaylene forwarded to me regarding getting
compost delivered to our garden in late April for $80/8 cubic yards.
It looks like a good option to me. Any thoughts?

Hi community garden coordinators,

This year's growing season is almost upon us. Some or most of us
have already started our seeds indoors to prepare for the warmer
weather. Time to start thinking about soil amendments for your
garden.

I'm the person in charge of compost delivery this year, some of you
may have met me during the deliveries last year. I'm compiling a list
of the gardens that want compost, most likely delivered late April.
Cost is the same this year, $80/8 cu yds. This covers our cost of the
truck rental and driver wages. The compost comes from yard waste at
Region of Waterloo landfill (fall leaves, wood chips, etc). Please
either post a sign or have someone available to provide a dumping
spot. No soft ground please as this has gotten the truck stuck in the
past and uses money that is not covered in the fee of the delivery and
makes the rest of the coordinators (or whoever is telling us where to
dump) wait till we can pull the truck out.

If your garden would like compost delivered, please signup with me so
I can arrange the truck and driver and make cheques out to CGCWR which
can be mailed to:

ATTN: Carol Popovic
Region of Waterloo Public Health

Happy garden planning :)

That would be convenient. I know if we were to go pick it up
ourselves we would need people to shovel it, provide transportation,
etc. Is 8 cu yds enough compost for us? (I have no idea how much that
is).

I think 8 cubic yards will be enough, possibly too much. My logic is below - please correct me if I'm wrong!!

Logic: I'm estimating the garden is 20x60 ft. This is 1200 square feet. I used this website to help me calculate how many cubic yards of compost we would need: http://thunderbucks.com/cubic.htm They suggested 3.8 cubic yards of mulch - we may want to use more compost than we would mulch.

Since there is going to be construction on the parking lot behind the Northdale Campus of WLU, we might have more difficulty getting the compost to the garden. We might have to take it in from Columbia Street. Does anyone have suggestions of how we can get the compost to the garden? How did you do it last year?

Last year they dumped compost and mulch in the parking lot to the
side, at the foot of the big hill. I don't know whether that is where
the construction is happening or not.

I personally do not feel that 8 cubic yards of compost will be too
much. It is hard to have too much compost. I could be disastrously
wrong, though. I think we got a similar amount of compost from the
Region a couple of years ago at the WPIRG garden, and it was fine.

The construction is going to take place in the parking lot right behind the building, and will go up to the second tier of grass. The top tier (where the garden is) will be fine, but we might not be able to walk up the hill at the end of April. I will confirm with WLU when the construction will start, but we should consider alternatives for how we can get the compost to the garden.

How will *we* get up the hill?

There is a path leading to the garden from Columbia Street that will be open for us to use. Below is a map I made of the garden area and the construction.

I put in an order for the compost delivery from the City dump. They haven't announced what day they will be delivering it yet, but hopefully it will be at a convenient time. If they haven't started construction yet, I can find out if we can get it dumped on the parking lot of the Northdale campus building. But it would be much easier for us if they could drive up the path off Columbia Street and dump it closer to the garden. Then we wouldn't have to get up the hill at all. I haven't heard back their thoughts on this yet.
