In the case of Ireland, from 1936 to 1949, the president and the monarch existed at the same time, and it was in a state of uncertainty as to who was the head of state. After the Irish Revolutionary War, the Irish Free State, which was separated from the British homeland by compromise and became the domination of the British Empire, introduced such a strange system as a transitional situation in which Edward VIII was reviled and abdicated to become a constitutional monarchy → a republic. Until 1936, the British monarch was the nominal head of state of the Irish Free State, and in this year, the constitution and laws were revised to change the name to Ireland, and the British monarch only represent Ireland externally, and other states were made to be represented by the newly established position, the President.[15] Therefore, there was a situation in which it was confusing who was the head of state of Ireland by law.
Of course, because Ireland followed the British cabinet system, the real power lies with the prime minister, the head of the government, and the head of state only plays a symbolic role. [16] Therefore, there was no big problem without specifying who was the head of state, and the roles and powers that the president and the British monarch actually play anyway were specifically stipulated in the Constitution and laws, so there was no possibility of conflict between the two.
Then, in 1949, when Ireland officially abolished its status as monarch, this ambiguity disappeared, making it a complete republic where the president was the head of state. Eamon de Valera, who was then prime minister of Ireland and lost the general election to become the leader of the main opposition party, argued that Ireland had already become a republic where the president was the head of state before 1949, but that it did not need to be touched because it only had an organ called the 'Lord' in the government. However, his opponents countered, "The current Irish state is in a state of limbo where we do not know who the hell is the head of state between the British monarch and the president," and argued, "Let's cut off the British monarch and become a complete republic because we don't have to be tied to an unlucky British anyway." Eventually, the latter position was carried out, completely depriving the British monarch of his status in Ireland, and in 800 years, the British monarch gave up the title of Irish monarch.
