Dear All,

Goonj, an NGO based out of Delhi, in association with two other NGOs, is planning a nationwide Joy of Giving Week around Gandhi Jayanti (Sep 27 - Oct 3). Through this nationwide event, Goonj hopes to collect 200-300 truckloads of resources that will then be distributed to over 20,00,000 families in hundreds of villages across the country. While Goonj currently does not have operations in Chandigarh, they are very keen to have the City participate in the event, and hopefully through the event, also establish a base here for ongoing operations. Please see email from Goonj below for more details.

About Goonj
Goonj has taken a simple idea - collection of old clothes, books and other household items from urban centres, and their redistribution to more needy parts of the country. Their greatness lies not in the idea, but in their vision, the sensitivity with which they work, and the sheer scale of their work. Started over a decade ago with just 67 clothes, they now collect, sort and distribute over 20,000 kg of material every month in over 20 states. Anshu, its founder, was recently recognized as an Ashoka Fellow, and Goonj was recently awarded the 'Indian NGO of the Year' award for its governance and practices. This is a call to all those who would like to help make this event in Chandigarh a success, and possibly, help carry on its operations in the city post the event as well.

The event will entail collection drives, sorting of material, working with regional NGOs for redistribution, generating awareness about the event and mobilising youth by visiting schools and colleges, and interacting with the media, among other activities.

We will be having an initial meeting this Friday, from which we hope to come out with a core team of 4-5 volunteers, and possibly, a reserve pool of volunteers who can pitch-in as needed. If you can think of anyone else who could be a good resource person to help make this event a success, please feel free to invite them to the meeting.
