Hi,

I am looking to add the minimOSD to my video feed on my new tricopter.  I am using the multiwii pro flight control board.  Typically I would add this OSD between my camera and video TX, but I am building it a little different this time.  Because the video TX often has less range than my Futaba radio, I am thinking of adding the OSD to the video feed at the receiving end instead of the transmitting end.  The reason for doing this is if the video drops out due to range, I would still have the OSD active with live data.

Is it possible to add an RF module with a wireless UART feature in between the flight control board and the OSD?  Will the delay in transmission cause problems on the OSD or the flight control board?  The UART link would be one similar to this one: http://store.ckdevices.com/products/DEV-120.html.

Hi Aaron,

yes that is possible and I have already made some experiences with the same equipment, the only problem you will have is the overlay of the Minim OSD when the signal is weak.

As you can see on the following video, I have already experimented with one/two OSD´s because of a ground station DIY monitor I am developing. The second OSD inside the ground station could do both, reading from serial protocol the FC data and/or show  just the ground station battery voltage and video RSSI.

I abandoned this project just because MAX can not overlay on weak or "snow" signal. On this video of April 12 2013 I was using two OSD but I had tried with just one reading with a 3DR radio.

Hope this helps you understanding the issues you will find.

Have fun,
-KV

Thank you for the advice.  I may still go ahead with it, but have the ability to turn off bad/noisy video and have the OSD overlay on a blank screen.  This way I can always monitor data.  Would this transceiver work with this code?  (Is the baud rate high enough?  Is latency a problem?)  It provides up to 10km of range!

I think so, go ahead and give it a try!

Well that just saved me a lot of time.
Was planning on building a ground station OSD.  Not interested if it has that limitation.
