Are both the Tools and Apps folders really needed?

I like to have all the programs I use frequently in the Kustomizer's "Home" folder, so that I don't have to do a lot of switching between folders.   I also dislike scrolling the launch icons, because it is so easy to inadvertantly start a program by accident.   Those two things make the 20 spaces for unscrolled icons in the "Home" folder very precious.    I wonder if it is worthwhile
having both "Tools" and "Apps" folders.    It is not clear to me that there is a very significant distinction between those
two categories.   If they were merged into one folder, that would free up a precious icon box on the "Home" page, and
every other launcher page.

The idea is not bad but it'd result having 22 icons in the new
category + the icons for other categories and would result a lot of
scrolling and that's again something not very useful.

If there's a solution or a suggestion (&implementation) for better
menu structure I'm happy to include it. And anyway feel free to
reorganize the icons in the menus (renaming will result also some
changes in the folder icon set, I think..).

How about using smaller font/icons? I'd really like to see smaller
font in the icons but I have no idea how to change it..

If there are no other solutions you can always add lines to your
/media/card/customscript to reorganize the icons & categories. (for
some reason I think no-one is using this except me. I use it to
install gpe-scap and agps settings, also eventually locale packages).

By the way, how many of you have actually read through the code to see
what Kustomizer does? I really encourage you to do it - it's no magic
in any way (my bash skills are close to zero :) and I'm sure you have
no problems understanding it but it'll give you a better picture on
what's happening.

At some version I really had problems trying to start GSM and the
solution was to move the gprs settings to be run later in the script.
I tried different combinations many times and finally got it
working... In a way I'd like to install gprs during the first stage
but I don't have the interest to start playing / messing with it now.
Waiting for 2009.x...

I think how you like to organise the folders is very personal. I like to have more folders, e.g. add a music folder and settings folder (settings, services, volume) to put things in there. The home folder I change into phone and leave only the phone-related icons there. This means more tapping, but less scrolling even though I have eight folders. Activating a programme while wanting to scroll is easily prevented by deactivating the default "single press" when you go to the wrench --> launcher. We will never be able to please everybody with a standard installation, but it is good to think about the best set-up for most people.
For now: Do the changes have to be made through Kustomizer or should the developer of the programme make these changes?

Before running the kustomizer script, I first change quite a few things. So yes, I do read through the script. Like most games I do not even want and out they go. I change settings for tangogps to point to my maps, change the weather to Rotterdam (NLXX0015) because it's been a long time since I last found myself in Helsinki. I have no need for Navit and Speach, so out they go too. I include OmShuffle, but then my modified version which can play not only mp3 but ogg as well and has a exit button.

I guess it's a good idea to think things over and get a fresh start when 2009 gets available... there should be enough changes to keep us occupied with then, so better sort these things out now.

I see your point with not wanting to see Helsinki weather, not needing
navit etc. As usual, there isn't a way to please everyone.

What I understand, we have two things to decide: a) on what basis to
select the apps that Kustomizer installs and b) how to allow the user
to be able to make the selection.

a) I've selected the apps thinking about what I'd like a new user to
see in his phone, like a showcase. It's not optimal but at the moment
there's not much I'd like to change except to be able to install one
web browser 'to rule them all'.

b) As yebo pointed out, an user that has more skills & requirements
wants to customize Kustomizer :). Do we want to run a pattern of
questions that ask the user what to install, like
http://www.siticompulsi.net/openmoko/demoko_3.0 already does. As it's
now, the user can a) remove the lines he doesn't like before running
it or b) write /media/card/customscript that will install the
additional apps/categories/whatever or remove apps he doesn't like or
apply the settings he wants (for example rewrite meooem.conf etc). I
myself don't like the idea of asking for what apps to install, unless
there's also the 'silent/beginner/defaul installation mode' available.
This would anyhow make Kustomizer a lot more complex and more
difficult to maintain (btw. we still dont have an 'open' svn/git/bzr
repository.. anyone..?).

I'm open to less/more/new apps if you only can tell me why something
should be changed (and I agree :)
If you're willing to write the required question pattern for packages
but also include the silent mode, I'm ok with it. For this a
bzr/git/snv repository would be very useful if someone can set it up
somewhere.

Comments/ideas?
