Question:

Is there any way to export GPX by Google Maps on an Android system directly?

Background:

@Tabbi mentioned in another Thread ("GPX-Import unterscheidet sich zwischen Kurviger App und Web") importing GPX out of Maps into Kurviger.

Because I often use both applications parallely (Maps for getting as fast as possible to a destination by Highways and avoiding traffic jams; Kurviger of course for nice and curvy routes in the destination area) I would like to know, wether there is any way to export GPX out of Maps, resp. which "interface" exists.

Or how do you get a Map's route imported to Kurviger?

Is there another way than via an intermediate KML file on a PC system?

Thx!
Uli

Hi Uli,

one option could be the website: https://mapstogpx.com/

They seem to export either the track or the route from a Google Maps link. I did a quick test. At first glance, some of the results seem a bit unexpected, not sure what went wrong though (might have been me ;)).

Cheers,
Robin

Let's start with the basics: made a route in Maps on Android, where is the option to export it in whatever format?

The Android version is very limited. I think you can export routes as .kml if you use them in my maps. Also the website I posted above takes the URL of a Google Maps route and probably puts the URL into the Google API to generate a gpx file.

Thx for your quick replies and help!! :)

Once again to the basics:

Creating a My Maps by Google Maps is only possible by Maps in a browser, not inside the android Maps app as fas as I see - right?

So you can only open a My Map created before by the Maps PC browser version - which means you can NOT export-import Maps > Kurviger on an android smartphone only - right?

Google Maps on Browser + Android now seem to allow sharing only with shortened goo.gl/maps links(?).

I think so, yes.

I think you can share a planned route as URL and put it into the website mentioned above. This website should create a gpx for you, which you could import into Kurviger.

Yes, just tried out - THIS seems indeed to be a "workaround" (thx to Robin!):

All the following steps realized on my Android 6 smartphone (internet connection necessary):

1. Create a route by Google Maps.
2. Click "Wegbeschreibung teilen" in the "3 dots menue" in the upper right corner of Maps.
3. Click (= send send the URL to) "Zwischenablage" (or send it to yourself or others by E-Mail or SMS or, as in my case, to a second WhatsApp acount, which is the fastest way in most situations).
4. Open mapstogpx.com in your Smartphone browser.
5. Insert here the "Zwischenablage" (or the URL stored before) and click "Let's go" - the gpx will be created and downloaded to the smartphone, and at least my Android offers instantly after download to open the downloaded file (some seconds at the bottom of the screen), so just click on the "Öffnen" button.
6. The gpx will be opened in Kurviger. :)

(I tested this with a fast Maps route to "Limburg an der Lahn" which I mentioned in the other thread - and Kurviger indeed opened the "Fastest" route via A3 ("78 km - 1:07 h").)

Maybe some of you may test this procedure, and if it works as well, we may add it to the Kurviger documentation?

Kurviger app used to support the goo.gl/maps links, i.e. open directly those links inside the app!

But lately it was broken from their side, so we'll need to review the whole process again. :)

IF we want to describe the 6 steps procedure (Google Maps > Kurviger) I described above in the Kurviger documentation, we can add the procedure vice versa (Kurviger > Maps) too, means showing a Kurviger route via GPX in Google Maps for several purposes like quickly getting to the starting point of a Kurviger route:

IMPORTANT: Beginning steps (1-13) work only in the browser version of Maps (there is no way to "Create Map" in "Your Places" by the Map app - or??)

1. Export a Kurviger route as GPX.
2. Open Maps in browser.
3. Open Menu (3 bars in the upper left corner).
4. Open "Your Places".
5. Open "Maps".
6. Open "Create Map".
7. Open "Import".
8. Import (by drag&drop or by filename) the GPX.
9. Kurviger Route will be shown in Google Maps.

Now you may:
10. Click on the starting point of the shown Kurviger route.
11. Click on the "Directions to here" symbol - the navigation menu opens with this starting point as destination.
12. Enter your real starting point, at example your home address.
13. Now Google Maps shows you a fast route to the starting point of your Kurviger route.

Now you may continue:
14. Your new "New Places Map" is shown in Android Google Maps too. You can long tap on the starting point of your Kurvinger route and Google will offer you one (or more) fast and direct navigation(s) to the starting point of your Kurvinger route (as in 13) (which indeed should be the same as shown in the browser version before, but perhaps completed with alternate routes like Maps often does if possible).

Useful?
Then we may publicate both procedures in Kurviger documentation?

Hi Uli,

sure, I think this is very useful and it would be great to document this :).

I prepared the basic documents for this in English and German. Would you be interested in adding some information there? I think many people could find this very useful.
(BTW: if you are interested, I highly recommend to start with English, then the forum offers you to show the diff between the English and German version, this only works if you do English first).

Cheers,
Robin

Of course will do ASAP. ;)

And still a supplement, to add another hint concerning Google Maps (GMaps):

In GMaps app I store ready routes simply by the following steps:

15. In Navigation mode open the menu (3 bars in the upper right corner).
16. Click on "Route auf Startbildschirm hinzufügen" (don't know whats in the English version of the App, probably something like "Add route to desktop"?).
17. GMaps will confirm by a short screen message.
18. Now a link symbol button to this specific route appears on the desktop, where it is to find again quickly everytime it is needed during travelling and a simple click on the symbol opens this route in GMaps directly and starts navigation mode - what can be done easily even while riding/driving.
19. When finished the trip I store all routes for later use by a symple drag&drop moving of the link button to a special subdirectory "routes", in which I can start navigation for every route again by simply clicking the symbol as above.

Done.

You may have a look wether it's clear enough - and my "Kenian English" ;) is not too incorrect ... ;)

Hi Uli,

thanks so much for your help! It looks pretty good, I only changed a couple of minor things, your English is pretty good :).

Just one note: it's "for example" not "at example" :), but I already changed that no worries.

Thanks,
Robin
