Robert Mugabe Has Resigned
Robert Mugabe resigned as Zimbabwe's president in a
letter to the country's parliament speaker Jacob Mudenda today. Mugabe
said that the decision to resign was voluntary and that it arose from his
concern for the welfare of the people of Zimbabwe and desire for a smooth,
non-violent transfer of power. He wrote in part, "I Robert
Gabriel Mugabe in terms of section 96 of the constitution of Zimbabwe hereby
formally tender my resignation... with immediate effect". Recently
fired Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa will take over as Zimbabwe's leader
within 48 hours. Mugabe's surprise resignation halted an impeachment
hearing against him by Parliament. After the resignation was announced
lawmakers roared into jubilation and people broke into celebration across
Zimbabwe.
